SCREEN AND STORM DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,274, dated June 30, 1903.
Application filed September 8, 1902. Serial No. 122,545. (No model.)
T0 aZZ whom) it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, MIcnAEL F. BYRNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monticello, in the county of Jones and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Screen and Storm Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to combined storm and screen doors, and the object thereof is to provide improved means for attaching and supporting removable panels.
As will hereinafter more fully appear, the blocks which support the panels also cover the joints of the door-frame and act to hold the frame together and also to hold down the corners of the screen.
The door is without rabbeting and has greater advantages with respect to cheapness of construction, as the parts are simple and readily put together and no special work or casting is required.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the door with one panel in place and the other removed. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the door-frame comprises stiles 6, top and bottom rails 7, and a middle rail 8. The rails are let into the stiles at the joints, and the joints are covered by corner-blocks 9. The screen 10 is laid on the face of the door-frame, and hence may be put on in one piece of full length and breadth, the corners of the screen being held between the frame and the corner-blocks.
Strips of molding 11 are run between the and may be of any suitable or proper construction and glazed, if desired. The blocks 9 and molding-strips 11 have the same thickness as the panels, so that they are flush therewith and assist in forming a weather-proof joint. A means to hold the panels in place comprise fiat springs 13, secured to the blocks at the bottom of the panel-recesses, and springlatches 14:, fixed to the top and middle rails in such position that the latch-bolts will engage in sockets 15, formed in the top edges of the panels. At 16 is indicated a piece of rubber set in the inside of the panels, adjacent the socket, which is compressed when the panel is latched and serves to hold the latch tight and prevent rattling. To set'the panels in place it is necessary only to drop the lower edge thereof behind the flat springs 13 and then press the top into engagement by the latch. The springs 13. bear on the panel with sufficient strength to hold it tight against the door-frame. When the panels are in place, a complete and efficient storm-door is formed and when taken out a strong and durable screen-door is made. 7
WVhat I claim as new is 1. A combined screen and storm door, comprising a frame having panel-openings and a screen thereover, blocks at the corners of the openings, covering the corners of the screen and the'joints of the frame, and removable panels supported on the frame and blocks.
2. A combined screen and storm door com prising a frame having panel-openings and a screen thereover, corner-blocks secured to the frame, covering the corners of the screen and the joints of the frame, stripsover the edges of the screen between the blocks, said blocks and strips being spaced back from the edge of the panel-openings, removable panels within the blocks and strips, forming a lap-j oint with the frame in said space, and retaining means for the panels, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
