DEVICE FOR PROTECTING COMBINATION DIALS.

PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY LIETZ, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 732,197, dated J une 30, 1903. Application filed March 18, 1903. Serial No- 148.437. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY LIETZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Device for Protecting Combination Dials and Dial- Rings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a cover of fireproof material to be placed over the combinationdial and dial-ring on doors of safes, vaults, and other places where the dial and dial-ring may be used to protect the same from being damaged or destroyed in case of fire. It has been found that in case of fire the heat will often destroy or damage to such an extent the combination-dial and dial-ring that it is impossible to manipulate the lock, so that in order to open the door the safe or vault must be drilled, or, in other words, burglarized. It is to obviate this that I have invented the device shown in the drawings and described as follows.
Figure 1 is a portion of a safe or vault door in front elevation with my device in position covering the combination-dial and dial-ring. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a View in rear elevation of my device.
Similarletters referto similar parts throughout the several views.
A is a section of a safe-door on which is mounted the combination-dial B and ring 0.
D is a cover of fireproof material, having secured to its under surface a spring 01 and to the recessed part c the metal platesfand f, and on the upper side at its circumference are numbers and division-marks corresponding to those onthe dial over which it is to be placed.
In using the device the knob or handle of the dial B is filed or flattened on opposite sides to fit into the recess 8 of the cover. It will be noticed that one side is filed or flattened more than the other. This is done to insure getting the cover on the dial so that the numberson the cover will coincide accurately with those on the dial, which is necessary in order to manipulate the lock correctly. On pressing the cover into place the spring at separates, then clasps the under side of the knob b, thereby holding the cover in its place. The cover may be placed on at night and removed again in the morning or any other time, or it maybe left on the dial permanently, in which case the lock can be manipulated by use of the numbers and marks on the cover, which coincide with those on the dial.
While I have shown a spring to hold the cover in place on the dial, I do not wish to limit myself to the use of the same, as other methods might be employed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a safe-door, a fireproof cover attached to the dial-knob of the combination-lock, and operates or revolves with same, both locking and unlocking without removing it from said knob, substantially as specified.
2. In combination with a safe-door, a fireproof cover constructed as specified, with means for attaching same to the combinationdial knob, whereby it can operate said dial for locking and unlocking, substantially as specified.
3. In combination with a safe-door, a portable or independent fireproof cover, provided with figures or marks to correspond with same on dial of combination-lock, and means for attaching said fireproof cover to the dial-knob, whereby it can be operated to lock and unlock said safe-door, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY LIETZ.
