HERBERT CO'ITRELL, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO L. A. SA'YRE 1 & 00., OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A FIRM.
4 SAW-SET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 731,864, dated June 23, 1903.
Application filed December 2, 1902. Serial No. 133,54=1. (No model.)
T0 at whontit may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT COTTRELL, of the city of Newark, county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sets, of which 1 the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a saw-set adapted to set two teeth of a saw oppositely at the same time constructed of such simple parts as to be produced cheaply.
My invention consists in constructing a sawset of upper and lower handle members, the
upper handle having the body and frame integral therewith and the lower handle forming the operating-lever.
It also consists in a longitudinally-operative slide-block forming a beveled anvil and a flat clamp and carrying a detachable set-point,
which projects from the base of the beveled face thereof, below which the slide-block presents a fiat transverse clamping-surface, and, further, it consists in an opposed slide-block which also forms a beveled anvil and flat clamp.
and carries adetachable set-point and which is adapted to be moved transversely by means of a screw-threaded shaft, both slide-blocks having projecting flanges extending outwardly I sliding support for the same.
beneath the frame, which forms a guide and In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side view. Fig. 2 is a plan viewI Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectionalview embodying my invention, in all of which like letters of reference refer to similar parts.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, (1 shows the upper handle member, having handle,
body, and frame integral. b shows the lower handle member, forming the operating-lever. c is the pivot fulcrum. d is longitudinal thrust-shaft; e, stop-pin; f, spiral retractile spring; I g, longitudinallyoperative slideblock, showing projecting guides at base in dotted lines; h, transversely-adjustable slideblock, showingsupportinguide at base; t and 7', oppositely-projecting detachable setpoints; 76, transverse adj usting-screw Z, openis inserted in opening Z between slide-blocks a g and h. The depth of tooth is adjusted by means of tilt-frame m and the width of tooth gaged by adjusting set-points't' and j to the proper distance apart. Pressure upon lower lever-handle 12 causes thrust-shaft d and slideblock g to move longitudinally toward slide- .block it and causes set-points i and j to each press a saw-tooth oppositely upon thebeveled surfaces of anvils g and 72, the saw-blade being held transversely square between the fiat clamping-faces of gand 71. Releasing pressure upon lever 1) permits spiral spring f to again separate the blocks 9 and h, and thus successively two teeth may be set atthe same time.
' The simplicity of structure, the rigidity of action of slide-blocks and set-points gained through their guide-supports, and the perfect transverse adjustment of the set points by means of screw-shaft distinguish my invention from other implements of the same class.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Lettors Patent of the United States, is
In a'saw-set comprising a handle-frame a longitudinally-operative slide-block, and an opposed slide-block carried upon and adjustably operated transversely by a screw-shaft; both slide-blocks provided with inclined anvil-faces, vertical clamping-faces, and flanged supporting-guides; in combination with projecting set-points removably held by the said slide-blocks, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have subscribed my name hereto this 29th day of November,'1902.
HERBERT O'QTTBELL.
