JAMES A. CREAGER, OF OKLAUNION, TEXAS.
DISK PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 731,436, dated J une 23, 1903. Application tiled March 24,1903. Serial No. 149,264. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern.' v Beit known that I, JAMES A. OREAGER, a citizen of the United States,` residing at Okla` union, Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk Plows, of which the following is a specieation. This invention relates to plows provided with a plurality of rotary7 blades or disks for the purpose of plowing up land; and the object is to simplify the `construction of plows ot' this class and to make the same less dangerous to the operator and to make plows stronger and more durable and efficient.
Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description, and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims. f
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the plow. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the plow in position for plowing, the tongue heilig broken away. Fig. 3 is a sectional View of the gang-board, showing 'one of the hangers for the gangshaft attached thereto, thus illustrating the manner of attaching the hangers to the gangboard. Fig. 4f is a cross-section of the gangboard along the line oc of Figs. 1 and 2, illustrating the manner of attaching the guidewheels.
Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views.
My invention is provided with a tongue 1, mounted oxi the gang-board 2 and secured thereon by a suitable bolt 4 and is further secured and made rigid by the bar 3, which serves as a brace. A hound 5 is attached to the tongue by suitable bolts and to the gangboard 2 by the bolt 6, the hound being twisted one-quarter around. The gang-board 7 is attached to the gang-board 2 by means of bolts 8 and 9, the end of the gang-board 2 being extended far enough on' the side of the tongue next to the gang-board 7 for this purpose. The hound 10 is attached to the tongue 1 and twisted one-quarter aroundaud attached tothe gang-board 7 and secured thereto by a bolt11. The hound 10 and the bar 3 add strength and firmness tov the gang-board 7. The gangboards are preferably made of slab steel.
The board 7 is made adjustable relative to the other parts of the machine for the purpose of regulating the depth of the plows or causing the plows to run on top ofthe ground. The manner of adjusting this board is shown in Fig. 2. The bolt 9 may be called the pivotl bolt. A slightly-curved slot 12 is made in the board 7 for the bolt 8, and a curved slot 13 is made in the board 7 for the bolt 11. Vhen the board is to be adjusted, the nulfson bolts 11 and 8 are loosened. The board 7 is then turned backward or forward, as may be desired. In the position shown in Fig. 2 the plows are set to run to their greatest depth. If the plowing is to be shallower, the bolts 8 and 11 are loosened and the board 7 swung backward on the bolt 9 as a pivot to desired position. If the plows are to be made to run on top of the ground, bolts are loosened and the board 7 swung backward until this board comes in line with the board 2. f i y The plows are mounted on one side of the machine, and the guides are mounted on the other side of the machine, and the gangs can be set at different angles-and made rigid with each other at various adjustments by the elements described in the previous paragraph. The plows 14 are mounted on the gang-board 7 by means of a gang-rod or gang-shaft 15, which is attached to the gang-board 7 by means of hangers 16 and 17, the hanger 17 'being mounted on the outside of the outside plow. The hangers 16 and 17 are provided with bearings 1S, bolted thereto, for the shaft 15. The hangers are secured tothe gangboard 7 by means ot' bolts 19 and 20. The plows are circular aud concave in shape, they being concave on the side on which the dirt is to be thrown.
The guides 21 are mounted on the opposite side of the plow from the blades 14 and run on top of the ground. The guides 21 are secured to the gang-board 2 by means of 'the gang-shaft 22, which is mounted in hangers 23 and 24. The hangers 23 and 24 are attached to the gang-board 2 in the same 'manner as the hangers 16 and 17 are attached to the gang-board 7, and these hangers 23 and 21 are provided with bearings 25 for the shaft 22.
In addition to the means for regulating the Ico ' not connected.
depth which the blades 14 are to run already described Ihave provided gage-wheels 26, one on each side of the group of blades. These gage-wheels may be mounted on the gangboard 7 in any suitable manner. I show these wheels mounted in bifurcated hangers 27. The ends of the slabs forming the gangboard may be bent down to form the depending flanges 28, and brackets 29 are bolted to the underside of the gang-board 7. (See upper right side of Fig. l, a portion of the side flange heilig broken away.) The hangers 27 are provided with a number of bolt-holes, so that these hangers may be attached to the anges 28 and brackets 29 at different adjustinents.
It will be noticed that the gang-shafts of the cutting-blades 14 and of the guides 2l are It has been found by actual Work that the plow does better service with these gang-shafts running independent of each other. The cutting blades are more easily adjusted and the blades are more free to run. The gang-shafts are held rigidly with the `:rang-boards by the hangers. It will be noticed that gang-boards have depending iianges 30. These anges brace and strengthen the hangers. The gang-board 7 is held securely in place by the hound 10, the gangboard 2, and the brace 3.
I have provided Scrapers 3l for blades 14. These Scrapers are mounted on a shaft 32, which is mounted in hangers 33, which are attached to the gang-board 7 by bolts 1S) and 20, as shown in Fig. 3.
