SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,923, dated-June 16, 1903.
Application filed January 31, 1903- Serial No. 141,342. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAM KEACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ruling-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to machines for ruling paper; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a detail side view of one of the cam-plates. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the machine. Fig. 4 is a cross-section through the cam-plate shown in Fig. 2.
A is the frame of the machine,.provided with a table a for the sheets of paper to rest on beforebeing ruled.
B is the impressioil-cylinder, journaled in the frame at one end' of the table and provided with means for revolving it, such as a belt-pulley 12, secured on its shaft 1).-
O is the ruling-shaft, provided with a series of ruling-disks 0, arranged over the cylinder B at any preferred distances from each other. The shaft C is j ournaled in bearings c, which slide in vertical slots D in the frame A.
E is the inking-cylinder, arranged over the shaft 0 and journaled in bearings e, which slide in the said slots D.
F represents disks on the end of the ruling-- shaft 0, and G represents cam-disks secured on the end portions of the shaft 1) of the impression-cylinder. Each disk G is provided with one or more cam-plates g, which are removable and adjustable, and these cam-plates raise the ruling-disks clear of the impressioncylinder when there isno paper on the said cylinder.

I is a feed-roller journaled in arms 1', which are pivoted on pins 2", projecting from the frame A. Disks 3' are mounted on the ends of the feed-roller and are raised by the camplates g just before the said cam-plates raise the ruling-shaft. The feed-roller is pressed downward by springs jor by gravity.
K is a gage-bar arranged close in front of the feed-roller shaft and having its ends secured to the arms 71:, which are pivoted 011 the said pins 1'. Disks k are also carried by the arms 7c and are operated by the said camplates 72 The gage-bar is pressed downward by gravity or by springs m. hen the gagebar is down 011 the impression-cylinder, a sheet of paper is slid against it and is thus alined. The motion of the impression-cylinde'r then causes the cam-plates h to raise the gage-bar and the cam-plates g to drop the feed-roller simultaneously upon the edge of the sheet 'of-paper, the ruling-disks at this time being held clear of the impression-cylinder by the cam-plates g. The paper begins to pass over the impression-cylinder, and as soon as it comes under the ruling-disks these disks are dropped by the continued motion the cam-plates h directly the feed-roller is of the table, a ruling-shaft provided with ruling-disks, and an inking-roller, both arranged over the said cylinder, two cam-disks secured on each end of the said cylindershaft and provided respectively with camplates 9 and h, disks on the said ruling-shaft in the path of the cam-plates g, a verticallymovable feed-roller provided with disks also arranged in the path ofthe cam-plates g, and a vertically-movable gage-bar provided with disksarranged in the path of the cam-plates it, said cam-plates g and It being arranged to operate alternately, substantially asset forth.
