Be itknown that I, AUGUSTINE R. EVEREST, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Lynn, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical Transformers, of which the following is a specification.
It is a common practice to provide transformers with connection-boards arranged inside the transformer-casing. Access to these connection-boards for purposes of inspection or otherwise is frequently very inconvenient on account of the weight and cumbersomeness of the cover for the transformer-casing. To obviate this difficulty, I provide the cover for the transformer-casing with an opening permitting access to the connection-boardwithin the casing, this opening being in turn closed by a small and comparatively light cover hinged or otherwise secured to the main cover. The
main cover, furthermore, is arranged so that when it becomes necessary to remove the same from the main casing it may be done as to disclose a portion of the interior; and
Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the top portion of the exterior of the transformer-casing.
In Fig. 1 the transformer-casing is represented at O. In this casing is mounted the transformer, consisting of the core E and coils D, of any usual design such as indicated. A block of insulating material I is supported by means of lugs F, secured in fixed relation to the core of the transformer. Upon this block I are mounted marble or slate panels N N, constituting the connection-board of the transformer. These panels are separated from each other, so as to increase the insulation between terminals of opposite polarity mounted, respectively, upon said panels.
The casing O of the transformer is PlOVltlGXI with a main cover V, which may be secured in' place by thumb-nuts T or similar devices. This main cover is provided with an opening having outwardly-extending walls adapted to surround the connection-board N N, so as to form a sort of box, the walls of which, however, are out of contact with the connectionboard. Through the walls of this box extend the outgoing cables, which are insulated from the walls of the box by suitable insulatingbu'shings B. The box-like portion of the main cover is closed by a supplementary cover J, hinged to the wall of the box portion of the main cover and secured in place by a thumbnut U or similar device.
It will be observed that in the arrangement above described access may readily be had to the transformer connection-board by merely lifting the light supplementary covcr J. In case, however, access to the interior of the transform er-casing is required for inspecting the level of the oil usually used therein or for any other purpose it will be observed that the main cover of a transformer may in such a case be removed without disturbing the connection-board or the permanent connections between this board and the transformer-coils. It is only necessary in such a case to disconnect the outgoing terminals from the connection-board.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination of a transformer, a casing therefor, a connection-board carried by the transformer, a main cover for the casing, an opening in the main cover permitting access to the connection-board, and a supplementary cover for said opening.
2. The combination with a transformer-casing, of a transformer and a connection-board within said casing, said connection boar'd being carried by the transformer, a cover for said casing provided with an opening for'permitting access to said connection-board, and arranged so as to be removable from the casing without disturbing the connection-board.
3. The combination of a transformer-casing, a transformer provided with a core of magnetic material and a connection-board therein, said connection-board being secured to said core, a cover for said casing provided With an opening therein having outwardlyextending Walls and an auxiliary cover therefor, said connection-board being arranged Within said casing so as to be surrounded by said Walls but out of actual contact with the walls or any other part of the cover.
4. The combination of a transformer, a casing therefor, a connection -board permanently mounted on said transformer, a cover for said casing removably secured thereto so as to permit access to the interior of the casing, and a covered opening in said cover for permitting access to said connection-board.
