PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK AUGUSTUS ANDREWS, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
- GAS TAP OR COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,332, dated June 9, 1903. Application filed February 16, 1903- Serial No. 143,672- (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK AUGUSTUS ANDREWS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 82 New Bond street, London, England, have invented new'and useful Improvements in Gas Taps or Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to gas taps or cocks.
Gas taps or cocks which are subjected to extreme heat-as, for instance, gas-cocks used in connection with inverted burners with incandescent mantles, such as described in the specification of Letters Patent No. 684,40&--are very liable to be injured by such heat and to become jammed.
The object of my invention is to provide a cock which will operate with equal efliciencyi whether hot or cold, and to this end my in-.
vention comprises the improvements hereinafter described.
According to my invention I provide a cook the plug of which is in the form of a frustum of a cone, as heretofore, but the angle or slope of which is such that when the cone is in its seat in the shell any expansion of the said cone will tend to force the cone out of the casing in a longitudinal direction instead of causing it to bind therein, as is the case with ordinary cocks. For convenience of reference I term said conical portion of the plug a quick-tapering conical portion to distinguish it from the very gradual taper of plugs in ordinary use. In practice it is advisable that the conicity of the plug should be such that the diameter of the base of the cone of which the plug is a frustum is at least equal to the height of such cone.
My invention will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows a cock in sectional elevation.
a is the shell or body of the cock, which, as shown, is of spherical shape and provided with a nozzle 1) and socket c f or the attachment to the gas pipe or fitting.
d is the quick-tapering conical plug, which in the arrangement shown in the drawing would have in longitudinal central Section the form of an equilateral triangle and which is fitted into a corresponding recess e: in the shell a. V
f is a cap which forms part of the shell and which is screwed into a corresponding aper- "any contraction.
ture in the said shell, a spring 9 being arranged between the inside of the shell and the base of the plug.
72. is a lever for operating the plug, andt' is the passage formed through the same and through the shell in the usual manner.
With this arrangement it will be understood that the expansion of the plug d will not cause the latter to bind in its seat, as the said plug will tend under expansion to move in a longitudinal direction, the spring g yielding under such expansion of the said plug and holding the said plug in its seat during The handle or lever in may be made of non-conducting material or may be insulated from the other parts of the cock and a by-pass for a pilot-light may also be provided for in the ordinary manner.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. In a cock, the combination with the shell or casing, provided with a delivery-passage therethrough and a conical seat interrupting said passage, of a rotatable plug, having a quick-tapering conical portion engaging said seat, and a passage therethrough adapted to register with the passage through said shell or casing, a stem rigidly connected to said plug and extending outside of the casing for turning said plug, and a spring engaging said plug and pressing said conical portion thereof against said seat, whereby the expansion of said plug will cause it to move longitudinally against the pressure of the spring and the binding of the plug in its seat will be avoided, substantially as described.
2. In a cock, the combination with the shell or casing, provided with a delivery-passage therethrough, and a conical seat interrupting said passage, of a rotatable plug in said cas-- ing having a quick-tapering conicalportion,
the base of said plug being at least substantially equal to the height of said conical portion, and being provided with a transverse passage adaptedto register with the passage in the shell or casing, and a spring engaging said plug and pressing it against said seat, whereby the expansion of said plug will cause it to move longitudinally against the pressure of said spring, substantially as described.
3. In a cook, the combination with the shell or casing having a passage therethrough and a tapering seat interrupting said passage, of a rotatable plugin said casing having a quicktapering conical portion engaging said seat and having a transverse passage therethrough' adapted to register with the passage through the shell or casing, said plug having a stem rigidly connected thereto and extending through the casing at one side thereof, the opposite side of the casing being provided with an aperture large enough to admit the
