UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT L. WERNERT AND FREDERICK C. DAVISON, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1911.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT L. WERNERT and FREDERICK C. DAvIsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to improvements in valves, primarily intended for use in connection with inflammable liquids, gases or the like, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a normally open valve with means for automatically closing the Vsame when the valve becomes heated beyond merals 1 and 2 designate sections of a gas or other pipe which is adapted to contain explosive fluids. These pipes are connected with the opposite ends of a valve casing 3. The casing is of the ordinary construction, being centrally provided with a valve seat 4 and having an lntegrally threaded off-set 5 which is arranged directly above the seat 4.
The numeral 6 designates a threaded plug which is adapted to be received within the threaded olf-set 5. This plug 6 is centrally provided with a vertically extending recess or bore 7, and the lower portion of the plug is provided with a downwardly extending sleeve 8. The plu 6 is formed adjacent its upper portion with a longitudinally arranged recess or bore 9, the same intersecting the recess or bore 7.
The numeral 9 designates the valve which is arranged directly above the valve seat 4. This valve has its body portion formed with an opening, the same being threaded and adapted for the reception of the lower threaded portion 10 of a valve stem 11. The stem 11 is formed with an annular reduced or cut away portion 12, the same being adapted to receive a suitable fusible material 13, the said cut away portion l2 being arranged at the intersection of the bores 7 and 9. By this arrangement, the fusible material can be applied to the bore 9 so as to contact with the shoulder formed by the depressed portion 12 to sustain the valve 9 in a proper position in relation to its valve seat 4.
The numeral 14 designates a helical spring which is adapted to surround the sleeve 8 and the stem 11.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that the fusible material may be readily applied to secure the stem 11 to retain the valve 9 against the pressure of the spring 14. It will be further noted that should the device be subjected to an extraordinary amount of heat, the material 13 will fuse, allowing the valve to be forced downwardly upon its seat 4 and to be guided thereto through the medium of a sleeve 8.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is In a device for the purpose set forth, a valve casing having a removable plug above the valve seat, the said plug being 4formed with bores arranged at right angles to each other said bores intersecting and one of the bores extending vertically above the valve seat, the plug beingprovided upon its lower face with an extending sleeve the bore of which is a continuation of the vertically arranged bore, a valve having a valve stern, said stem being Vprovided with a recessed portion and adapted to be arranged within the bore provided within the sleeve and to have the said recessed portion positioned at the junction of the bores and to receive a fusible material, and a helical spring surrounding the sleeve to exert pressure between the plug and the valve.
In testimony whereof we ailix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
