PATENT OFFI E.
IPUMP-RODC-OUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,173, dated June 2, 1903. Application filed February 17, 1903. Serial No. 143,774. (No model.)
tion and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my coupling- Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail of the clutch. Fig. 4 is a detail of the'locking-lever, partially in section. Fig. 5 is a detail of the fixed jaw of the clutch. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective of the pivoted jaw. Fig. 7 is a detail section of the pumprod joint, together with the hand-grip shown in full lines.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the diiferent viewsof the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates a base-plate on which two standards 2 are footed to support an arm 3. Guide apertures 1 and 3 are formed in the base 1 and arm 3, respectively, to accommodate a pump-rod 4 for operating a lift-pump. (Not shown.) A handle-lever 5 is mounted intermediate the standards-2 and is detachably connected to the pump-rod 4 by means of a clutch mechanism 6, comprising a fixed jaw 7 and a pivoted jaw 8. The jaw 7 is mounted on a pump-rod 4 and has a semicircular notch 9 therein located to cooperate with a similar notch 10 in the jaw 8 to embrace a cross-pin 11, carried by the upper slotted end of the handle 5. The jaw 8 is pivoted on a pin 12, seated in the pump-rod 4, and carries a rearwardly-extending arm 13, which is engaged by a cam-groove 14, formed in the lower end of the short arm 15 of a lever 16, fulcrumed on a pin 16*, seated in the pump-rod 4. A catch 14 is mounted adjacent to the groove 14 and is yieldingly held by a spring 14, which bears on a reduced shank 14, formed on the catch. The head 14 of the catch is rounded off to conform to the slot 14 and bears on the pin 13 to create friction and hold the lever 16 against accidental displacement. The long arm 17 of the lever extends upwardly and carries a slotted extension-section 18, which has an arm 19 formed on its upper end to support a lever 20pivoted thereon. One arm of the lever 20 is shaped to form a hand-grip 21 for operating the lever 16, while the other arm is rounded off to form a pin 22, which is adjusted to engage an aperture 23, formed in a guide-sleeve 24, carried by the lower end of a pitman 25, non nected to be operated by a windwheel" or other motor. (Not shown.) The pin 22 also engages an aperture 26,formed in the upper end of the rod 4 and registering with the aperture 23. The aperture 26 is one of a series 'formed in the rod 4 with which the aperture 23 can be brought into register, and the pin 22 may be fitted in by adjusting the position of the extension 18 on the arm 17.
When it is desired to pump water by means of the motor, the aperture 23 is brought into registerwith one of the apertures 26, the grip 21 grasped, the lever 16 carried over, and the pin 22 inserted in the registering apertures 23 and 26. This action will actuate the short arm 15 of the lever 16 to operate the movable jaw 8 to release the cross-pin 11,
and thereby uncouple the handle 5 from the pump-rod 4.
To uncouple the wind-wheel or motor, the
'arm 17 is pulled out by means of the grip 21 to withdraw the pin 22 from the apertures :23 and 26 to uncouple the pitman and also to operate the jaw 8 to embrace the cross-pin 11 to couple the rod 4 and handle 5 to enable the pump to be operated by hand.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these" may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a pump-rod coupling, the combination of a pump-rod, a handle-lever fulcrumed intermediate its ends and having a slotted end bearing a cross-pin, a pivoted jaw mounted on said pump-rod, a fixed jaw located to cooperate with said pivoted jaw to engage said cross-pin, a lever having a slot therein engaging said pivoted jaw to operate it to a slot therein engaging said clutch member to operate it to couple and uncouple said handle and said rod, a pitman connected to a motor, and a coupling-pin carried by said lever to couple and uncouple said pump-rod and said pitman, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
