Description
' PATENTED JUNE 2, 1903.
' H. RUBENS.
HAIR PIN AND MANIOURE IMPLEMENT.
APPLICATION FILED OCT-13. 1902. I
N0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented June 2, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
HAIR-PIN AND YMANICUR-E IMPLEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 729,898, dated June 2, 1903.
Application filed October 13,1902. Serial No. 127,036- (No model.)
The primary object of my invention is to' provide a manicure implement in a form that will adapt it to be stowed away when out of use by sticking it into the hair on a womans head, where it will be conveniently accessible when desired for use on the finger-nails, besides, incidentally, affording means for fastening the hair.
The ordinarily inadequate provision in womens wearing-apparel of pockets in which to stow articles they desire to have handy for toilet purposes renders inconvenient the carrying about with them of such articles. By providing a manicure implement as a hairpin in a form adapting it to penetrate the hair, which it may also serve to hold up and, if desired, to ornament, I compensate for the lack of a pocket, so far as such an article is concerned, and enable women to carry with them a suitable manicuring implement without inconvenience where it is most conveniently accessible at all times.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 illustrates my improved article applied as a hair-pin. view of the article, and Fig. 3 a section taken 7 at the line 3 on Fig. 2 and viewed in the direction of the arrow.
A is a hair-pin formed in the shape repre sented in the drawings, or in any other desired shape, of metal or of any other suitable material. One end of the device is beveled, as shown, to point it and form it into an implement a, adapted to to be inserted undera finger-nail for cleaning it. The opposite end of the device is expanded into a head and is formed into the implement b, adapted for use in pushing back the cuticle on the fingernails. While the cuticlepushing implement b may for my purpose be provided in any of various forms, I prefer to provide it in the form in which it is illustrated, wherein it is divided into two blades b and 19 each beveled at its extremity and longitudinally c011- Fig. 2 is a perspective cavo-convex, as shown, or, at least, longitudinally concave on one side, to cause it to conform to the contour of the nails, and the outer corners of the blades should be rounded, as shown. By thus forming theimplement b it serves for pushing back the cuticle not only at the base of a finger-nail but also at the corners and without scratching or disfiguring the surface of the nail. I
The face of the head portion of the pin may be ornamented, the letter M being applied in Fig. 2 to denote the space referred to for ornamentation.
I claim as my invention- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a hairpin provided at one end with a cuticle-pushing manicure implement, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a hairpin provided at one end with a beveled nailcleaning manicure implement, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a hairpin provided at its opposite ends, respectively, with a cuticle-pushing manicure implement and a beveled nail-cleaning manicure implement, substantially as described.
4:. As a new article of manufacture, a hairpin having an expanded end beveled toward its extremity and rounded at its corners and forming' a cuticle-pushing manicure implement, substantially as described.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a hair pin having an expanded end divided into two blades, longitudinally concave on their un-- der sides and beveled toward their extremities, forming a cuticle-pushing manicure implement, substantially as described.
6. As a new article of manufacture, a hairpin beveled at one end to form said end into a nail-cleaning manicure implement, and having its opposite end expanded and divided into two longitudinally concavo convex blades beveled toward their extremities and rounded at their corners and forming a euticle-pushing manicure implement, substantially as described. i HARRIET RUBENS.
In presence of- L. HEISLAR, ALBERT D. BACCI.
