Description

atten entre atwt `ffi^tr JUsTUs DoERINe, v0E PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, AssIGNoE To' HIMSELE, A. 1E. SHELLY, AND CHARLES DIXEY, OE SAME PLAGE. Letters Patent No. 72,986, dated January 7, 1868; atztedated December A26, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOP-cours.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAYA CONGERN:
Be it known that I, JU'STUS DOERING, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, havev invented an Improvement in Stop-Cocks; and I do'hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference b'cingiha'd to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists o i` certain improvements, fully described hereafter, in stop-cocks, to be used inconnection with hydrants, or wheneverluthe cock has to be placed at a point diliieult of access, the improvemen being such that the plug can be readily withdrawn from its s eat, repaired, and as'readily returned. My invention further consists of a inodilication, to be used in connection with hydrants and filters.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe`v its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is an outside view of my improved stop-cock,
Figure 2 a sectional view of the same,
Figure 3 a plan View, arid Figure-4 a modification of my invention.
Similar letters refer to similar parts `throughout the severalviews. Y
Between the discharge-pipes `A and'A, -and inthe casing B of a stop-cock, is formed a conical opening, a, for the reception of a hollow conical sleeve, C, -which is prevented from turning in the same by lugs bib, which form a. part of the sleeve, and rest between projections c c, situated'labovc and on each side of the opening a. When the sleeve istbus inserted, its openings,'cZ CZ, are in line with the pipes A and A. A conical plug,vD,-is inserted into the sleeve C, and is secured in its seat b'y a screw and washer, e. y
In stop-cocks of ordinary construction'which are placed beneathlthe surface of the ground, 'and operated from above, such, for instance, as those used for hydrants, the-plug has its sent in the casing B of the cock, and is secured to the same in such a manner that it cannot be detached until the carthis rcmovedlfrom above. If theplug becomes jammed in its seat, or the cock leaks, the repairing of the same is a matter involving considerable delay and expense. This objection is obviated by'the employment of the sleeve C, which, with the plug, can be readily lifted out'of'the opening a, repaired, and returned to its place, or a new plug can be introduced. i v
The modification of my invention shown in tig. his to be employed where a filter is used in connection with the hydrant. The water flows through the pipev A,'through the openings ofthe sleeve C and'plug D, and through the pipe A', which leads t-o the filter. The pipe E is for the passage of-the puried water from the bottom of the filter, andthe pipe F for the ordinary hydrant-water from the top of tho saine, and communication is opened with either of these pipes, as desired, by turning the-plug to the right or left.
I claim as my invention, and desire to/secure'by Letters Patent- A Y The combination ofthe case and conical valve of a cook, and a conical. stationary sleeve, fitting the case, and in which the valve turns', and which is so constructed and connected to the valve that it may be withdrawn with the Alatter from the case without the necessity of detaching any nuts or other` fastenings, all substantially as described. l
In testimony whereof, I have signed my lname-to this specification in thepresence of two subscribing witnesses.
JUsTUs DoERINe.
