Be it knownthat I, JOHN F. ISBELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Classifiers or Sizers; and I do declare the following to be afull,l clear, and exact description lof the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the `ligu res of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. i
My invention relates to improvements in hydraulic classifiers or sizers whereby pulverized ore in the form of pulp is separated or classied according to the size of the particles,

Thevtube 10 is also vertically adjusted to regulate the space between its fiared or funnel-shaped upper portion and the valve, whereby the force and quantity of the water passing upwardly around the valve and through the funnel for performing the sizing function is regulated and controlled. The pipe 14 may be connected with any suitable watensupply apparatus adapted to give the required pressure for sizing purposes, As the water passes upwardly from the chamber 5h, through the tube 10, around the valve, and through the opening in the bottom of the funnel the force of the currentraises the smaller or finer particles of ore, while the larger or heavier particles fall downwardly by gravity against this current, passing through the conduit 1G and thence through The lighter or smaller particles of ore which are carried upwardly by the current of water overfiow at the top of the funnel, and if several funnels or sizing devices are used, as shown in Fig. 3, the overflow from the first funnel passes to the next one, where another grade of mineral particles, classified according to. their size or fineness, is caught, and so on, until as many grades are taken from the pulp as desired or until the pulp is entirely deprived of its mineral particles, there being as many classes or grades as there are distinct sizing devices employed. The operation may be continued until the pulp is completely deprived of its mineral particles, leaving nothing but clear water to overflow at the top of the last funnel. lVhen it is desired to vertically adjust the valve and tube independently of each other, one of the hand wheels 12 or 13 is held against turning while the other is turned.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim ism 1. In a hydraulic classifier or sizer, the combination of an upright casing having a funnel-shaped top, a valve-chamber below the funnel, a reduced part below the valve-chamber, an enlarged part below the reduced part, and another reduced portion below the enlargement, a tube located in said casing filling the reduced portions thereof, passing through the enlargement, and protruding into the valve-chamber, its valve-chamber extremity being outwardly flared or funnelshaped, the said tube being open where vit passes through the enlargement to allow the water to enter, its opposite extremity protruding from the casing, a supply-conduit connected with the casing enlargement, a valve located in the valve-chamber adjacent the lower extremity of the funnel, the lower portion of the valve being surrounded by the upper extremity of the tube, the valve being provided with a stem passing downwardly through the tube which ,is large enough to allow the water to flow upward freely around the valve-stem from the casing enlargement, the valve-stem fitting the tube below the casing enlargement and protruding below the same, the tube and valve being adjustable vertically in the casing for the purpose set forth.

In a hydraulic classifier or sizer, the com# bination of an upright casing having an overflow atV the top, a valve-chamber in the upper part of the casing, the upper part of said chamber being constructed to forma valveseat, a valve located in the chamber to control the upward passage of the water and the downward passage of the sized material, the water and sized material passing around the valve which is ovalshaped, the valve having a downwardly-projecting stem whose lower extremity protrudes from the casing, a tube whose upper extremity is located in the valvechamber and surrounds the valve, and means for introducing water to the tube under pressure whereby it is caused to How upwardly around the valve, the casing being provided with a lateral passage leading from th e valvechamber below the top of the tube for the escape of the sized material, substantially as described.
3. In a hydraulic classifier or sizer, the combination of a casing having an open top, a valve-chamber below the top, the top of the said chamber being contracted, a valve located in said chamber and arranged to control the passage of material to and from the valvechamber, a tubewhose upper extremity is open and located in the.valve-chamber, the valve having a stem passing downwardly through vthe tube, means for introducing water to the tube under pressure, whereby it is caused to flow upwardly around the valve into the top of the casing, and means for a relative vertical adjustment of the valve and tube within the casing, substantially as described.
4:. In a hydraulic classifier or sizer, the combination with a casing having an open top, and a valve-chamber below the casing, of a tube threaded in the casing to permit vertical adjustment, its upper extremitybeinglocated in the valve-chamber, means for introducing water under pressure to the tube below the valve-chamber, and a valve loca-ted ini. the said chamber and projecting into the top of the tube, the arrangement being such that the water from the tube is compelled to flow upwardly around the .valve into the top of the casing, the valve having a stem threaded in the tube to permit independent vertical adjustment, substantially as described.
