JOURNAL-BEARING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 729,656, dated une 2,1903.
Application filed March 30, 1903. Serial No.150,096. (No model.)
To all wh/0111, it may concern:
at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J ournal-Bearings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the` art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to journal-bearings,
and particularly to that class of bearings project into the shaft-hole of said wheel, and
a pin for securing said cheek-pieces in operative position.
It further consists of certain other constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical cross-` section, partly in elevation, of a caster in which my said invention is embodied. Fig." 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the forked body portion of a caster embodying said invention. Fig. 3 is an outer side elevation of one of the cheek-pieces forming part of said invention. Fig. e is a vertical crosssection of a sheave embodying said invention.

If desired, as in the case of the sheave shown in said Fig. et, the branches of said fork may be joined at their opposite ends and the forked member atthat `point adapted, as by the attachment cfa hook 7 thereto, to engage a suspending means S, in which latter construction the ta ble, washer, and post hereinbefore described may be omitted. Upon the inner face of each of the branches of said forked member are Awheel 10 of any suitable construction is inserted between the branches of said fork'. A cheek-piece 11, having a hub portion 12 formed thereon, is posi- 4tioned at one side of said wheel between the face thereof and the contiguous branch of said fork, with said hub portion extending into the transverselydirected shaft-hole of saidwheel. Said cheek-piece is preferably indented in any suitablem anner, as at 13, to receive the shoulder 9 of the contiguous branch of said fork, and said cheek-piece is of sufficient diameter to bear against said shoulder. A second cheek piece 14, having a `hub extension 15 formed thereon, is positioned at the opposite side of said wheel between the farce thereof and the adjoining branch of said fork,with its said hub portion extending into the shaft-hole of said wheel. The last said hub is preferably reduced at its end, as at 15`,whereby itis adapted to extend into a recess preferably formed in theend of said hub 12. The combined length of both of said hub portions is preferably a little greater than the transverse diameter of said wheel, whereby friction between said cheekpieces and the outer faces of said wheel is avoided. Said cheek-piece 14 is preferably indented in similar manner to the piece 11 to receive the shoulder of the adjoining branch of said fork. A screw or pin` or rivet 16 is proj ected centrally through said branches, cheekpieces, and hubs to secure the parts together. In operation the strain of the load is transferred, in the case 'of the caster, from said fork through said shoulders to said cheekpieces and hubs and wheel, avoiding any strain on said pin or rivet. In the case of the modiiied construction embodied in a shcave the strain is transferred from the Wheel to the hubs, cheek-pieces, and through said shoulders to said fork and suspending means, avoiding any strain upon said pin or rivet. Said hubs thus form a journal-bearing of large area not likely to be easily broken down or worn out, as is the case in many casters or sheaves where the load-strain is carried on a small axle.
.Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a journal-bearing, the combination with a wheel, of a forked member adapted to straddle said Wheel, and having shouldersformed upon the opposing faces of its branches, cheek-pieces positioned at opposite sides of said wheel, between the sides thereof and the branches of said forked member, and respectively having hub portions formed thereon adapted to extend into said wheel to form the axle thereof, said cheelcpieces being adapted at their peripheries to bear against said shoulders, respectively, substantially as described.
2. In a journal-bearing, the combination with a wheel, of a forked member adapted to straddle said wheel, cheek-pieces positioned at opposite sides of said wheel between the wheel and thebranches of said fork, said cheek-pieces having hub portions formed thereon adapted to extendinto said wheel and engage each other to form the axle of said wheel, said cheek-pieces being adapted at their peripheries to engage said shoulders and to bear against the same, and means for securing said cheek-pieces to said forked member and for securing said cheek-pieces to each other, substantially as described.
3. In a journal-bearing, the combination with a wheel, of a forked member adapted to straddle said wheel, and having shoulders formed upon the opposing faces of its branches, cheek-pieces positioned at opposite sides of said wheel, between the sides thereof and the branches of said forked member, and respectively having hub portions formed thereon adapted to extend into said wheel to form the axle thereof, said cheek-pieces being adapted at 'their peripheries to bear against said shoulders, respectively, means for securing said construction in load-receiving position, substantially as described.
4:. In a journal-bearing, the combination with a wheel, of a forked member adapted to straddle said wheel, cheek-pieces positioned at opposite sides of said wheel between the wheel and the branches of said fork, said ,cheek-pieces having hub portions formed thereon adapted to extend into said wheel and engage each other to form the axle of said wheel, said cheek-pieces being adapted at their peripheries to engage said shoulders and to bear against the same, and means for securing said cheek-pieces to said forked member and for securing said cheek-pieces to each other, means for securing said construction in load-receivin g position, substantially as described.
5. In a journal-bearing, the combination with a wheel of a forked member adapted to straddle said wheel, cheek-pieces positioned at opposite sides of said wheel between the side faces thereof and the opposing faces of the contiguous branches of said forked member, said cheek-pieces having hub portions formed thereon adapted to extend into said wheel to form the axle thereof, a locking-pin projected through said branches, cheek-pieces and hubs, for securing said parts together, said forked member and said cheek-pieces being adapted to engage each other in such manner as, in connection with said locking-pin, to maintain a normally fixed relation between said forked member and cheek-pieces, and means rfor securing said construction in load-receiving position, substantially as described.
