Description

A. B. SEYMOUR.
Q RAILROAD RAIL. I
No 7,295. PatentedApr. 16, 18:50.
A, B. SEYMOUR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMPOUND TUBULAR RAIL.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 7,295, dated April 16, 1850.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, A. B. SEYMOUR, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rails of Railways, and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the principle or character which distinguishes my improvement from all other things before known and of the manner of making,
constructing, and using the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a plan, and Fig. 2, a cross vertical section of a rail on my improved plan.
The same letters indicate like parts in the two figures.
My invention relates to improvements upon the two-part rail secured to me by Letters Patent bearing date the 13th of March, 1849, which rail is made in two parts di vided by a longitudinal and vertical plane, when the sections are brought together and unit-ed by breaking joints and secured by screw-boltsor keys, so that the junctions of the sections of the one half, shall be in the middle or near the middle of the sections of the other part. And the invention or improvement for which I now pray Letters Patent consists in making the inner face of each of the two parts with a longitudinal recess so that when the two parts are united, they shall constitute a tube, into which blocks are fitted at the junctions of the different sections to add strength and stability to the rail.
In the accompanying drawings (a, a,) represent the two halves of a rail united by a vertical joint at the line (B, b). The inner face of each half is made with a longitudinal recess or rabbet (0), so that when the rail is put together it shall form a tube. The recess (0) I usually make rectangular, as shown in the drawings, although it may be made of any other form, and to this hollow space I fit blocks of iron ((Z) or other material, which blocks I insert at the junctions of the diflerent sections to give stability to such junctions. The rivets or screw bolts (6) by which the two parts of the rail are united should pass through these blocks to hold them in place. I usually prefer to make the blocks of the form represented in the drawings, that they may be in contact with the inner face of the rail, near the top and bottom.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The making of a two part break joint hollow rail, substantially as herein described; and in combination with the twopart rail made hollow as specified. I claim the blocks inserted in such hollow, at the junctions of the sections, substantially as described.
7M. BISHOP, ALFRED Ron.
