SPECIFICATION foi-ming part of Letters Patent No. 729,081, dated May 26, 1903.

Be it known that I, DAVID P. MONROE, an alien of Canada, having tiled my declaration of intent-ion to become a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints; and I do'hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple, rigid, and eective joint for connecting together the ends of abutting rails, whereby the same will be held and mai ntained in perfect alinement and effectually prevented from displacement or one rail rising above the other, the joint being equally applicable to all classes of rails, whether the ordinary T-rail or the rails used with the underground-trolley system.
The invention consists in a joint for the coupling together of the abutting ends of railroad-rails constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the ordinary T-rails, and B the girderrails, both of which are supported upon the usual cross-ties C of arailroad-track and held thereon by spikes d or other means found most preferable. The joint with which the T-rails and girder-rails are connected together consists, in part, of the two chair-sections D E, having depending blocks F, which abut against each other when the two chairsections are brought together, each chair-section having an upwardly-extending iish-plate G, between which the rails are held, and sedrawings comprises two box-sections H I, so
that when brought together will form a complete box, with which the blocks F engage in coupling the abutting ends of the rails together. The box-sections H I have projecting iianges d at their base, so as to enable the head of the spike a to overlap the same in connecting said box-sections to the cross-ties. The box-sections H I are cast or otherwise provided with suitable fish-plates J to adapt them vfor attachment to the sides of a girderrailthrough the medium of bolts e and nuts f. The {ish-plates J have longitudinal ribs g upon their inner sides to better clamp the plates against the sides of the rail through the medium of the bolts and nuts or other fastenings used. -When the fish-plates G J are connected to the rails A B, respectively, and the blocks F engaged with the box when the two sect-ions H I are together, and the bolt h, which passes through the sections and blocks, connects them together and tightly draws the box-sections against the blocks by means of the nuts 1l, a perfect and practical joint is provided that can be adapted to any size rail of whatever construction.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting my invention to any special form or construction of rail or any special form or construction of sh-plate, as the fish-plates may be variously modified or changed withoutin any manner departing from my invention.
