Letters .Patent No. 72,845, dated .December 31, `1857'.
IMPROVEMENT IN PADLoeKs.
@Ligt .rigehule tcfemhgit in time tettctt ziteut amt mating part nf tige same.
TO 4ALL WI-IOM IT MAY CONCERN: y
Be it known that I, lJOHYI I3. Git-EEN, 'of Darien, in the'county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful I inprovcmentin Padlocks;A and-,Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying dawing,""forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation ofthe padlock. l
Figure 2 is a centralsectionl taken onthehplane ofthe line :v rv, iig'. 1.. Y
Figure 3 is a transverse section, taken on the plane ofthe linejy y,g.'1..
`Figure 4 is a view of a. key for locking and unlocking thepadlock. l
My invent-ion consists in a.peculiarconstruction'oi` a padlock;A whereby', when it is in nse,all of its working parts are shielded from the entrance of rainmrsnow, and whereby avery-siinple and cheap Vlock can be produced. Italso Consists in a peculiar manner of'hinging thejlatch to the body of thefpadlock.
A designates the body, ofl the padlock, and'ithe' latch.,` The formel1- fis-nearly,seinicircular in form, and the latter a strip of met-al crossing the legs'of the Vbody A, and hinged ong-legof tl1e said body, and locking into the other. Themanner of hinging the latch to thc'body is by a screw, d, cut'jupon one legvof'the body A, or upon a piece set therein. This screw, ((vworks in -a-nut, cut in the latch B. I will, however, remark that the screw a may be a projection made on thelatch soneto screw in a mit in the body A, it' desired. rlbe sim-A plieity'ot` a hinge of this character is obvious. In practice, the' body A would be cast with a stern ononeend, which .could be chased with a screw-threa l to forint-he screw Il), and a corresponding nut be tappdin' the latch, o r the reverse could be the case, as before stated. 'lbe locking is eected by a screw, c, working in a socket, cl, in the latch, and a nut', c', in the'body, the said screw eto be operated-'by a key, C. i
It will be seen that this lock of a most simple construction, .there being, in fact, but three parts, the body A carrying ascrew, a, the latch B, and the screw e. The body and latch can bc of cast metal or mal; Y loable iron, andthe wor-l; of fitting the screws und tapping the nuts is very little indeed. By this-form or construction of padlock,.its naturalposition, and theone it'innst always assuhic in the stap-le, is with'the rounding part of the body upward;' hence the working parts are always shielded from rainv or snow, and are therefore not likely to rust.
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent., is-
A padlock, having a curved body, A, and straight latch B, hingedtogether by the screw a and socket I),
and otherwise constructed and arranged substantially'as herein specified.
JOHN B. GREEN.
