PATENT OFFICE.
COIN-OPERATED WElGHlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 728,275, dated May 19, 1903.
Application filed December 8, 1902. Serial No. 134,288. (No model.) I
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JESSE MORGENTHAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Coin-Operated Weighing-Machines, of which improvement the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of coin-operated weighing machines in which the coin is caused to pass into a temporary receptacle carried by a weighted lever controlling the index-hand.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby the normal position of said lever may be adjusted to produce accuracy of movement in the indicator-hand.
'As there are many forms of coin-operated weighing machines employing a lever in which a preponderance of weight at one end caused by the coin being temporarily held therein is arranged to transmit movement to the indicator-hand and as there are also a.
variety of platforms and mechanisms therefor which are wellknown in the art, I deem it unnecessary to illustrate or describe a machine of the character set forth beyond that which is necessary to describe my improvements.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown portions of a weighing-machine of the character to which my improvements relate, in which drawings Figure l is a vertical view of the mechanism at the rear of the dial, showing my improved means of adjusting the lever. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of a portion of said mechanism and improved adjusting means.
Further referring to said drawings for a detailed description thereof, the numeral 1 indicates the dial, and 2 the coin-chute.
3 indicates a pivoted lever having a receptacle 4 at one end to temporarily receive the coin delivered from said chute and a weight 5 at the other.
6 is a segmental gear-rack which meshes with a pinion '7, secured upon the pivot of the indicator-hand.
The numeral 8 indicates the rod connecting with the platform mechanism, which rod is provided with a cross-piece 9 for connecting with the springs 10.
11 is an air-cushion cylinder, the piston 12 which lever is operatively connected to the said rod 8.
In practice an abutment of some character rod ascends by being relieved of the weight of the person or body upon the scale-platform connected therewith, it being understood that said lever 3 descends only when over-balanced by a coin in the receptacle carried thereby.
The trouble heretofore experienced in machines of this character was that it was difiicult to adjust the lever 3 controlling the index-hand relative to the abutment carried by the platform-rod, and to overcome said difficulty I provide the cross-bar 9 with a suitable standard 14, carrying an adjusting-screw 15 to engage a lip or projection 16 upon the said arm, which screw is provided with a jam-nut 17 to lock it in its adjusted position. By means of this adjustable abutment the saidlever may be adjusted to the most minute degree, thereby enabling the index-hand to be regulated to indicate the precise weight.
Having thus shown and described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a coin-controlled weighing-machine, the combination of the indicator-hand having a pinion attached thereto, an oscillatable gravity-lever carrying a segmental gear to mesh with the pinion of and operate the indicator-hand, a spring-connected cross-head attached to the platform-rod, and a verticallydisposed extension carried by said cross-head and provided at its upper free extremity with a set-screw to engage said gravity-lever, substantially as shown and set forth.
2. In a coin-controlled weighing-machine, the combination of the'indicator-hand having a pinion attached thereto, an oscillatable gravity-lever carrying a segmental gear to mesh with the pinion of and operate the indicator-hand, a spring-connected cross-head of which is pivotally connected to a lever 13, t
attached to the platform-rod, a verticallydisposed extension carried by said cross-head and provided at its upper free extremity with a set-screw to engage said gravity-lever, and
5 a lock-nut carried by said set-screw, substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JESSE MORGENTHAU.
In presence of- THOS. A. JOYCE, JAMES J. FALLON.
