MEASURING-RULE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Pawnt No. 728,137, dated May 12, 1903.

To ctZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. SEVER- ANOE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Greenfield, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Measuring-Rules, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in measuring-rules especially designed for measuring small distances upon surfaces in slots or recesses, 85c. when an ordinary handleless scale or similar measuring-rule could not practically be employed; and for such purpose I construct my invention as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- V Figurel is a front elevation of myinvention, shown enlarged; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1, part of the handle being shown in elevation.
Similar letters refer to similar parts where ever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
A represents a rule or blade preferably made of metal and provided at its outer edge with a graduated index B, as is common in rules or similar devices. Such blade may be of any desired length, according to the use for which it may be intended. For small measurements it may be made from one-fourth of an inch or less up to about one inchin length and properly graduated in fractions of inches, according to the degree of measurements desired. I wish to state that I do not desire to confine myself to any particular length, size, or thickness of the rule or blade, as this may be varied according to circumstances without departing from the essence of my invention. In connection with such graduated rule I use a handle 0, which is attached at one end to that edge of the plate opposite the graduated edge and in such manner that the handle projects at an angle to the rule. The outer end of the handle 0 is preferably knurled, as shown at O in the drawings. By means of said handle the graduated edge of the rule may be held close up to the surface that is to be measured, and this is particularly useful and advantageous when using the device for measuring distances, &c. in slots, recesses, &c., where an ordinary Serial No. 109,142. (No model.)

Such arrangement also permits the rule to be inserted in confined spaces and the graduations read without the view being obstructed by the hand in which the handle is held.
It may sometimes be necessary to use the rule in places where it may be desirable to hold thehandle swung to one side of the rule, and for such purpose I pivot the rule to the end of the handle, as shown, and in practice I make integral with the end of the handle a pin or stud C", which is inserted through a perforationin the rule A and riveted to it, so as to be held frictionally adjustable relative to the rule, thus permitting the handle to be swung at any desired angle to the rule, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. I wish to state that I do not wish to confine myself to this exact manner of pivotally connecting the handle to the rule, as thismay be done in any other desirable manner as may be found most practical and convenient.
By having a handle attached to the rule as hereinabove shown and described the operator is enabled to hold the rule in narrow spaces, slots, recesses, &c., for taking or making measurements which otherwise would be difficult and sometimes impossible without the use of a handle for holding the rule in position relative to the object during the measuring operation.
