My invention is applicable to the type of limekiln known as open running kiln. The line A B in Figs. 1, 3, and 4 indicates the top level of such a kiln, the construction of which is well known andforms no part of my invention. Above the'top of the kiln I build two arches 1 2, with a space or slot 3 between.
them. The outside ends 4 of these arches are provided with stoking-orifices 5, normally closed by doors 6, and through these doors fuel is fed at suitable intervals. A short distance from the outside ends 5 of the arches I afiix a metal sheath 7, and the space 8 between them serves as an air-heating chamber, which is fed with air through airsupply pipes 9 from any suitable source. The air from chambers 8 enters the economizer by a series of ports 10 and combines with the glowing gases, carbon, or smoke arising from the kiln. Above the arches 1 and 2 is placed a sheet-metal cylinder 11, lined .with firebrick 12. The interior of the lining is cylindrical at the top and thereafter is gradually narrowed downward in one direction, (see Fig. 4,) so that at the bottom it coincides with the slot 3 between the arches l and 2. I provide another series of air-ports 13, which are supplied with air from an encircling passage 14. The air is supplied to this passage by means of inlet-pipes 15, and this construction facilitates ventilation of the space 16, where the stokers of the fuel stand. In some cases the air- chambers 8 and 14 may both be supplied with air under pressure.
I wish particularly to point out that only limestone is fed into the top of the econoinizer and only fuel is fedthrough the openings 5. There is thus no combustion of fresh fuel in the economizer; but the limestone receives a preliminary heating and economizes heat which wouldotherwise be wasted. The air entering at ports 10 combines with the smoke or incandescent carbon, and if carbon 'monoxid exists above the said ports itis converted into carbon dioxid. by combination with the air entering the ports 13.
I am aware that airh'as previously been supplied near the top of the column of mixed limestone and fuel, and I make no claim to that process ybut with my invention the air is supplied above the fuel-level, and the intense heat which usually exists at the constricted neck at the top of the kiln is not augmented at that point, and thus the destruction of the neck is lessened. With myinvention the heat is more gradually'utilized, and I believe that perfect combustion of the gaseous and incandescent matters arising from the kiln is insured by my economizer.
What I claim as my invention, and'desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In an economizer for limekilns the combination of a receptacle for the limestone above the kiln, a pair of arches to support said receptacle, openings in said'arches whereby fuel may be fed into the kiln, a series of ports adapted to supply air above the kiln, another series of ports at a higher level adapted to conduct a second supply of air above the first, and means for supplying air'to said ports, substantially as described.
2. In an economi'zer for lirnekilns the combination of a pair of arches spanning the top of the kiln and having air-inlets on their inner faces, a receptacle for the raw stone supported by said arches in such manner that its contents may be heated by the products of combustion arising from said kiln, fuel-feed holes in said arches, an air-channel in the wall of said receptacle above the top of said arches and ports leading from said air-channel to the interior of said receptacle and air-supply pipes leading from the outer portion of said 4. In an economizer for limekilns the base whereof consists of a pair of arches having fuel-feed holes in their end Walls, the combination with said arches of metal sheaths forming air-chambers whereby the air may receive a preliminary heating before entering said economizer, substantially as described.
