To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, J OSEPH L. GILES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joplin,
county of Jasper, and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registers, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to registers.
The object of the invention more particularly is to provide an improved and novel register for keeping account of the number of tubs of dirt hoisted per day in excavating or mining operations, although itis not essen-' tially restricted to such uses, and I aim to make provision for a register which will be simple, durable, and inexpensive and positive and reliable in its operation.
To accomplish the foregoing objects, I provide a register comprising certain improved features and novel combinations of parts set forth in detail hereinafter and recited in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front View; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Figs. 3 and 4, perspective views; Fig. 5, a section on line as a of Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 a section on line y y of Fig. 2.

It Will be understood that different dials could be employed with difierent indicia thereon, if desired. The dial is secured to the frame at 4. Journaled in the bearing 5 on the frame and in the offset 2 is a tubular shaft 6, which carries on its outer end a pointer 7, adapted to play over the outer set of graduations, and on this shaft, between the offset 2 and the dial, is a ratchet-wheel 8, having teeth corresponding in number to the outer set of graduations and provided with a hub 9, which bears against the back of the dial. To prevent backward rotation of the ratchet-wheel, a pawl 10 is provided.
The numeral 11 designates a shaft extending through the tubular shaft 6 and carrying on its outer end a pointer 12,adapted to play over the inner set of graduations on the dial, and onIthe inner end of said shaft isa ratchetwheel 13, having teeth corresponding in number to the inner set of graduations, and this ratchet-wheel is held against backward rotationby a pawl 14.
The numeral 15 designates an actuating member, which isjournaled in the frame and retracted by a coil-spring 16 and provided with the finger 17, which is normally in position to engage a tooth of the ratchet-wheel 8. This actuating member has an arm 18, extending forwardly of the dial and limited in its movements by stops 19 and 20. This arm is adapted to be struck by the hoist-er-rope or any moving member on the machine in connection with which the register is to be used, and on the extremity of this arm I prefer to provide a leaf-spring 21 to prevent too far turning of the pointer. The actuating member has a vertical movement in the frame, so that it can readily snap back to normal position when returned by the coilspring.
On the shaft 6 is a pin 22,.and 23 is a transferring member pivoted to "the frame at 24 'and having the fingers 25 and 26, the former .moving the pointer 7 from 1 to 2 or from 2 to 3, and soon, on the outer set ofgraduations. Whentheshaftoand pointer 7 have completed a revolution, the pin 22 engages finger 25 and causes finger 26 to turn ratchet-wheel 13 one space, moving the pointer 12 from 0 to 10 or 10 to 20 on the inner set of graduations. The respective springs return the actuating and transferring members to normal position on release of the arm 18.
The register is inclosed in a suitable case having a glass front covering the dial.
I am aware that changes of construction could be resorted to in carrying out the invention, and I lay claim, therefore, to all modifications falling within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isj;
1. In a register, the combination With a dial, of a shaft having a pointer adapted to travei over the dial, a ratchet-wheel on said shaft fa second shaft having a pointeradapted 10 travel over the dial, a ratchet-wheel on said second shaftga journaled actuating member havinga finger adapted to engage the ratchetwheel of the first shaft and an actuating-arm by which it is turned, said journaled actuating member being adapted to rise and fall in the direction of the axis on which itis journaled, and transferring mechanism actuated by the first shaft on each complete revolution thereof and adapted to engage and space the ratchet-whee; of the second shaft.
2. In a register, the combination with a dial, of a shaft, a pointer carried thereby adapted to travel over the dial, a ratchetwheel on said shaft, a journaled actuating member having a finger adapted to engage the ratchet-wheel, and an actuating-arm by which it is turned, said journaled actuating member being adapted to rise and fall as an entirety inthe direction of the axis on which it is journaled, and stopsto limit'the play of the actuating member.
3i In a register, the combination with a dial, of a shaft, pointer carried thereby adapted to travel over the dial, a ratchetwheel on said shaft, a journaled actuating member having a 'finger adapted to engage the ratchet wheel, and an actuating-arm by which it is turned, said journaled actuating member being adapted to rise and fall as an entirety in the direction of the axis on which it is journaled, stops adapted to limitithe play of the actuating-arm, and a spring-5 for turning back the journaled actuating member' to normal position on the release thereof.
