SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,722, dated May 12, 1903.
Application filed March 18, 1902. Serial No. 98,771. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ZAIDA B. WEBB, of
Madison, county of Morris, State of New J er-V sey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip- IO tion is to produce a strong, simple, and attractive package which can be instantly set up or knocked down, which cuts to particularly good advantage, and which is adapted to form a box of the shape of a cube, although The box forming myinvention is particularlyintended to be very strong when set up and to be fastened or unfastened very quickly.
With these ends in view my invention consists of a folding box, the construction and arrangement of which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,
2 5 in which similar figures of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Figure l is a detail of the box-blank. Fig.
2 is a perspective view of the partially-formed box; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the box 0 when partially formed and flattened down for shipment, so as to be ready for use.
The box is made, preferably, though not necessarily, with its sides, top, and bottom of equal size, and it comprises a sidelO of rec- 5 tangular shape, from two edges of which project two other side pieces 11 of the same siz e as the first-mentioned side piece, while the fourth side is formed by the two engaging wings 13, the several side pieces being preferably separated from each other by scorelines, and score-lines are preferably made wherever a bend occurs in the box. The two side pieces 11 are preferably provided with flaps 12, which are arranged at opposite edges and are adapted to fold inward to form the box ends or top and bottom, as the case may be. The wings 13 are cut into, as shown at 14, the out being preferably triangular, with the greater incline next the side pieces 11,
and the cut on one wing 13 is on the opposite edge to that of the secondwing, so that by these cuts engaging and slightly-undercut tongues 15 are formed, one being relieved.
slightly by preference, as shown at 15*, so thatthe parts may be more easily engaged. This, however, is .not absolutely essential. The Wings 13 have each a flap 16 of a size corresponding to'one of the parts 10 or 11, which is adapted to fold inward to form the box-closure, and each extension or flap 16 has a terminal tuck 17 to be tucked into the box, so as to fasten the said parts 16. It will be seen, therefore, that to form the box it is only necessary to grasp the blank by the two opposite ends and bring the parts 13 together, the blank being slightly twisted and the slots 14 pushed together, so'that the tongues 15 will engage each other, lying on the inside of the parts 13, as shown in Fig. 2. Thus a very secure fasteningis made, and it will be seen that it can be very quickly accomplished.
To provide for quickly using the box or for shipping it ready for use, the above-mentioned parts can be fastened as described and as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and then by pressing on one side of the blank and with a little lateral motion the blank can be flattened down, as shown in Fig. 3. Then when the box is to be used-it is only necessary to press it up to the shape shown in Fig. 2, turn in one set of flaps 12, fold the extension or flap 16 over these flaps l2, tuck in the tack 17, then fill the box, fold in the second flaps 12, turn the second flap 16 over them, and insert the tuck 17 in the box edge. The box may be provided with the cut-away portions terminating nearer to or at the seam of the juncture of the wings and side pieces to make a joint that will leave the panels clear of edges to facilitate printing thereon, &c. Thus it'will be noticed that a perfect cubical package-is formed which is very strong and very attractive for many purposes.
Of course the particular shape can be de- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a folding box comprising five side portions, two of them to entirely overlap and cover the side at which they meet, said overlapping side flaps having slots in the opposite sides to lock them into one another, and a wing on each overlapping flap to fold and close the ends of the box.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a folding box comprising five side portions, two of them to entirely overlap and cover the side at which they meet, said overlapping side flaps having slots in the opposite sides to lock and short flaps being adapted to fold in and close the ends of the box.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 23 name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
