PASTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent NO. 727,602, dated May 12, 1903.
Application filed March 2, 1903. Serial No. 146,669. (Nomodeh) To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that LCHARLES E.DUL1N,a citizen of the United States, residing at Glens Falls, WVarren county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pasting Devices, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
My invention relates to a device for applying a paste; and my object is to improve the construction and attain superior results.
Where a rotating wheel is used which dips into the paste in a paste-pot and a scraper is provided for removing surplus paste, such as lumps, therefrom, the paste accumulates on the scraper and hardens and finally forms a channel in which the wheel rotates, thereby often preventing the liquid paste from reaching the wheel, orthe accumulated paste scrapes the wheel clear of paste, so that none or not enough is delivered at the 'point desired. In the preferred embodiment of my invention I provide a construction which automatically cleans the scraper of this paste, which would otherwise accumulate, and also agitates the paste at the point where the wheel emerges from the paste. This prevents the clogging up of the device with accumulated paste and keeps the paste liquid at the point of emergence, whereby the wheel always takes up liquid paste in sufficient quantity.
My invention will be defined in the claims.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, the paste-pot being in section; and Fig.2 is a front elevation with the pot in section.
In the drawings, 13 is a traveling paste-cam rier, preferably a rotating wheel, and A is a device for supplying paste thereto, preferably a paste-pot into which the wheel dips. P is the. paste, and by the word paste I merely mean an adhesive substance. This Wheel is preferably mounted on a shaft H, journaled on the pot. As the wheel rotates it takes up paste and applies it, for'example, to a web of paper I, which passes over rolls J and K, in a thin line or as may be desired.

This scraper does not entirely clean the wheel of paste, but removes any surplus paste or This surplus paste accumulates on the forward side of the scraper-that is, on the side toward which the wheel moves, which in this case is the lower side-and if the paste were allowed to accumulate it would harden and finally clog up and interfere with the proper operation of the device, as heretofore explained. In order to clean this scraper, I provide a member which is movable across said scraper adjacent to said carrier. By across I do not mean that it must necessarily touch the scraper or move transversely to the carrier. This member preferably reciprocates and in the embodiment shown in the drawings is an armD, fixed to the shaft E, pivoted in the paste-pot and projecting therefrom and extends to the forward side of the scraper. In order to reciprocate the arm, a second arm F may be provided, which is fixed to shaft E and has a forked end in which a cam-wheel G, fixed to the shaft H, moves. This will rock the arm back and forth transversely of the paste-wheel as it revolves.
The same device which cleans the scraper preferably operates as an agitator for the paste adjacent the point where the wheel emerges from the paste, and in the present embodiment the arm D serves this double purpose. I preferably curve the arm so as to conform to the curved face of the wheel, and solocate it that there is only a slight clearance between it and the wheel, as shown. Consequently it not only operates to agitate the paste and prevent the formation of a crust of congealed paste around the Wheel, which would interfere with the free access of the liquid paste to the wheel, but also prevents lumps or surplus paste being carried up by the face of the wheel.
It will be obvious that many variations from the construction shown in the drawings may be made without departing from my invention as claimed, and I therefore do not limit myself to the embodiment of my invention heretofore described and illustrated.
What I claim is- 1. In a pasting device in combination, a
' traveling paste-carrier,means to supply paste thereto, a scraper for said carrier, and means for automatically cleaning said scraper of accumulated paste.
2. In a pasting device in combination, a traveling paste-carrier, means to supply paste thereto, a stationary scraper for said carrier, and means for automatically cleaning the forward side of said scraper of accumulated paste.
3. In a pasting device in combination, a traveling paste-carrier, means to supply paste thereto, a scraper for said carrier, means for automatically cleaning said scraper of accumulated paste and comprisinga member movable across said scraper adjacent to said carrier, and means to move said member.
4. In a pasting device in combination, a traveling paste-carrier, means to supply paste thereto, a scraper for said carrier, and means for automatically cleaning said scraper of accumulated paste and comprising a reciproeating member movable across the forward side of said scraper adjacent to and transversely of said carrier, and means to reciprocate said member.
5. In a pasting device in combination, a rotating paste-wheel, means to supply paste thereto comprising a paste-pot into which said wheel dips, a stationary scraper for said wheel, means for automatically cleaning the forward side of said scraper of accumulated paste and comprising a pivoted arm extending into the paste in said pot and movable 7 across the forward side of said scraper adjacent to and transversely of said wheel, and means to reciprocate said arm.
6. In a pasting device in combination, a traveling paste-carrier, a paste-pot into which said carrier dips, an agitator for said paste comprising a member located in the pastein said pot adjacent to the face of said carrier and the point where said carrier emerges from said paste, and means to move said member across said face.
7. In a pasting device in combination, a rdtating paste-wheel, a paste-pot into which said wheel dips, an agitator for said paste comprising a member located in the paste in said pot adjacent to the curved face of said wheel and the point where said Wheel emerges from said paste, said member being curved to correspond with the curved face of said wheel, and means to move said member transversely across saidface.
8. In a pasting device in combination, a traveling paste-carrier, a paste-pot into which said carrier dips, a scraper for said carrier, means for automatically cleaning the under side of said scraper of accumulated paste and comprising a movable member in part located in the paste in said pot adjacent to the face of said carrier and extending out of said paste and to said-scraper, and means to movesaid member across said scraper transversely of said carrier, whereby said member is adapted to agitate said paste in said pot and remove the accumulated paste from said scraper.
9. In a pasting device in combination, a rotating paste-wheel, a paste-pot into which said wheel dips, a stationary scraper outside of the paste in said pot and partially embracing said wheel, means for automatically clean ing the under side of said scraper of accumulated paste and comprising an arm pivoted in the paste in said pot and extending along and shaped to conform to the curved face of said wheel and extending out of said paste and substantially to the under side of said scraper, and means to rock said arm back and forth across said scraper transversely of said wheel, whereby said arm is adapted to agitate said paste in said pot and remove the accumulated paste from said scraper.
