PATENT OFFICE.
DRAFT ATTACHM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 727,447, dated May 5, 1903. Application filed October 18, 1902. Serial No. 127,792. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. RIEDLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thurston, in the county of Thurston and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Thisinvention relates to draft attachments for grain-separators or threshing-machines;
and it consists in the novel construction and.
combination of the parts hereinafter fully d escribed and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a traction-engine, a tender, and a threshingmachine connected together according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail side view of the foot-lever on the engine. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the coupling between the tender and the threshing-machine, showing the parts disconnected. Fig. 4: is a side view of the parts shown in Fig. 3.
A is a traction-engine of any approved construction.
B is the tender for holding the fuel and water for the engine. This tender is connect%d to the engine by any approved coupling O is a threshing-machine, grain-separator,
or any agricultural implement or vehicle which may be drawn along at the rear of the tender. This machine or load is provided with a draft-tongue 0, having a forked end portion 61 and a vertical pin 6.
D is a draw-bar secured at the rear of the tender B and provided with a forked end portion f, which has V-shaped guide-notches g at its end.
E is a bell-crank lever pivoted on a pin it in the forked end portionfand working in a horizontal plane. This bell-crank lever is provided with a hook c', which has an inclined front portion j, and this hook works between V the said guide-notches.
attached at one end to the said foot-lever and at the other end to the cross-arm h of the said bell-crank lever.
The forked end portion cl of the drafttongue of the threshing-machine preferably consists of two plates, of which the upper plate 2 is longer and broader than the lower plate 3, so that it may have a large wearingsurface to bear on the top of the draw-bar, and both plates have beveled portions 4, so that they may slide easily into engagement with the draw-bar.
The threshingmachine is coupled automatically to the tender by pushing the parts of the coupling into engagement with each other. The uncoupling of the threshing-machineis effected from the engine by depressing the foot-lever. This is a great advantage, as it enables the engine to start oif at once when required without the threshing-machine or other load, which sometimes is highly necessary, as well as convenient. The coupling Z) between the engine and its tender is such as to forma flexible connection between them and to permit them to turn corners.
What I claim is 1. The combination, with a traction-engine, a wheeled tender independent of the said ongine, and a draft-coupling between the said engine and tender; of a draw-bar securedto the tender and provided with a coupling for the load, an operating device carried by the engine, and a flexible connection between the said operating device and coupling, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a traction-engine, a wheeled tenderindependent of the said ongine, and a draft-coupling between the said engine and tender; of a draw-bar secured to the tender and provided with a forked end portion having guide-notches at its end, a
Ico
plates which have beveled portions and which straddle the said coupling, the upper of the said plates being longer and broader than the lower, an operating device carried by the engine, and a flexible connection between the said operating device and coupling, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRED. \V. RIEDLER.
