CHARLES T. \VHITE, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
FAUCET-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,242, dated May 5, 1903. Application filed July 15, 1902. Serial No. 115,675. (No model.)
To (1.7-7 whom u; may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to couplings; and its object is to provide one which may be applied to the discharge end of a pipe or faucet, especially adapting the same for connection with a eer bottle machine, in which the leakage caused by back pressure is obviated; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists of a casing containing a yieldingcone, which is supported therein in such away as to provide a liquid-tight joint, which automatically seals itself when back pressure is brought to hear thereon, the parts being so aggrouped as to insure a rapid. and convenientcoupling and provide an inexpensive and durable structure.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the coupling applied to a faucet. Fig. 2 is a top and side elevation of the yielding cone. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the coupling with the cone removed. Fig. i is ai'side elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawings, the casing A is composed of a metallic shell having a vertical annular upper wall 0., provided on opposite sides thereof with upstanding ears a adapted to carry the means for attachment to a pipe or faucet. This vertical wall a merges from its lower end into a conical concavo-convex wall (1. which terminates at the contracted pipe extension 6%. I
The cone B may be made of rubber or other yielding material provided with a central downwardly-tapering bore 1), in which the end of a discharge pipe or faucet F is inserted, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The upper portion of the cone is thickened, and in its vertical periphery, which corresponds with the vertical wall a of the casing, is formed an annular groove 1), adapted to engage the annular rib I) on the casing, by means of which the of the invention,
to form a chamber between cone is supported therein. From the edge of this groove 1) the periphery of the cone is curved inwardly and downwardly, as at c, forming a contracted lower end 19 and providing a thin and consequently very-resilient lip b, which will seal against the lower face of the rib b when back pressure is brought tobear thereon and prevent leakage. When the coupling is attached, as in Fig. 1, the
lower contracted end b is expanded, accentuating the curvature of the periphery c and forming an elongated annular chamber 0, the open lower end of which is narrower than the central portion, whereby the back pressure on the surface 0 has a tendency to cause the bore b and the lip b to impinge all the tighter against the faucet F and the rib b respectively, and provide an automatic backpressure liquid-tight joint.
The ears a carry any suitable fastening means, which preferably consist of thumbscrews 1), the threaded shanks of which pass through the apertures in the ears and terminate in forked extensions d, which engage the discharge end of the faucet F and hold the coupling thereto.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a coupling, the combination of anonelastic casing having an elastic packing posited therein, provided with means to detachably secure it to the casing, said packing having a contracted depending free end adapted the casing and packing, and means on the packing to seal the same against its securing means.
2. In a coupling, the combination with a non-elastic casing having an elastic packing posited therein, said packing having a contracted depending free end and a lip merging from the side thereof, the contracted free end adapted to seal against the pipe and the lip adapted to seal against the casin g when back pressure is brought to bear on the packing.
3. In a coupling, the combination of a shell or casing having an upper vertical wall provided with a rib and a contracted lower wall, a yielding cone having a thickened upper portion provided with a groove to engage the rib and a lower contracted portion adapted to be expanded when attached to a pipe, a lip beneath the groove adapted to seat against the rib when back pressure is brought on the cone, and fastening devices on the casing to contracted vwall, an elastic cone having a thickened upper end provided with an annular groove to engage the rib and a contracted depending thinner end having an inwardly l and downwardly cu rved periphery providing a chamber between the concave wall of the casing and the periphery of the depending end, whereby the cone will tightly impingeagainst the pipe and the rib when back pressure is brought upon thesame.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
