Description

UNTTED STATES Patented May 5, 1903.
PATENT @EETQE.
ALBERT HAASE, OF ESSEN-ON-THE-RUHR, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO FRIED KRUPP, OF ESSEN-ON-THE-RUHR, GERMANY.
CHARGENG=SHOT FOR SHRAPNEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 727,132, dated May 5, 1903.
Application filed December 8,1902. Serial No. 134,422.
(No specimens.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT HAASE, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Essen-on-the-Ruhr, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Charging-Shot for Shrapnel,of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to charging-shot for shrapnel, and has for its object to so increase the power of penetration of the shot that they can, in contradistinction to the shot heretofore employed in shrapnel, penetrate steel shields, which are recently coming into use in connection with field artillery. This :5 object is attained according to the present invention by having the charging-shot consist of an alloy of steel with one or more of such metalsfor example, Wolfram, nickelas will lend to the steel a greater resistance to compression and a greater toughness, combined with greater specific gravity. If, for example, for the manufacture of the shot one selects a Wolfram-steel with up to ten per cent. Wolfram, an essential increase of strength and toughness over the usual carbon-steel is obtained, which specifically increases if the alloy has mixed with it nickel, chromium, and molybdenum. Accordingly as one attaches importance to obtaining a particularly hard or a particularly heavy shot the composition of the steel alloy will be varied. For example, by the addition of thirtyseven per cent.wolfrain a remarkable strength is attained with a specific gravity of 9.82.
On the other hand, by the use of an alloy of steel with nickel a very significant resistance to compression and toughness are obtained,
while the specific gravity increases but a coinparatively slight amount. In each case, however, by the'use of charging-shot produced 40 from such a steel alloy a penetrating power will be attained, other conditions being equal,
by the high resistance to compression and toughness of the shot, in combination with large specific gravity, which the protectingshields on field artillery in use at the present time will be incapable of withstanding.
The form of the shot is immaterial to the essence of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, the following is what is claimed as new therein:
1. Charging-shot forshrapnel, consisting of an alloy of steel with a metal such as Wolfram or the like which lends to the steel a greater specific gravity, and under otherwise equal conditions increases its penetrating power.
2. Charging-shotforshrapnel,consistingof an alloy of steel with a metal such as nickel which increases the resistance of the shot to compression, and increases its toughness and consequently its penetrating power under otherwise equal conditions.
3. Charging-shotforshrapnel,consistingof an alloy of steel with a metal such as Wolfram which increases its specific gravity, and a 6 5 metal such as nickel which increases its toughness and resistance to compression whereby the penetrating power of the shotis increased.
The foregoing specification signed at Dusseldorf this 25th day of November, 1902.
ALBERT HAASE.
In presence of- WILLIAM ESSENWEIN, PETER LIEBER.
