ROBERT S. OLOUGHLIN, OF GLENS FALLS, AND JAMES F. BIRMINGHAM, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK; SAID OLOUGHLIN ASSIGNOR TO SAID GARMENT- PATT E R-N SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,739, dated April 28, 1903.
' Application filed December 26, 1901. Serial No. 87,165- (No model.)
To all whom it WMLZ/ concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT S. OLOUGH- LIN, residing in Glens Falls, county of Warren, and JAMES F. BIRMINGHAM, residing in the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment- Patterns, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to garment-patterns, and has for its object the convenient identification of the patterns not only as to their proper connection, but as to a standard measurement, such as the bust-measure, for which the pattern is intended.
The invention consists in the particular construction pointed out in the appended claim, while the description and drawings refer to a specific embodiment of our invention.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan of a portion of a jacket-pattern-namely, the sleevepattern; and Fig. 2 is a partial cross-section thereof on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
A is the body of the sleeve portion of the pattern, all of which is made usually of tissue-paper or of any other suitable material. The outline of this body is of course immaterial so far as our invention is concerned, and we have shown the sleeve portion as an example only. This body A has a suitable distinguishing mark or symbol produced upon it-for instance, the letter M. The mark is either printed upon the tissue-paper or other suitable material or, preferably, produced by perforations. This, however, we do not claim as a feature of our present invention.
Upon a suitable portion of the body A, preferably at the center thereof, we secure, as by gluing it on, a label or piece of paper or other suitable material B, on which may be printed proper data as to the character of the garment to which the patterns belong. One portion of this paper B is provided with a field O of a contrasting color, generally black. In this field a numeral D is produced by perforations-for instance, the numeral 34, as shown, this numeralindicating the size of the pattern, for instance, with reference to the bust-measure. It will be understood, particularly by reference to Fig. 2, that the perforations will expose part of the body A, and as this is generally made white or light yellow it will be clear that the number D will be better visible than if the perforations were extended entirely through the pattern that is through the body, A as well as through the paper or facing B. Where we speak of contrasting colors we mean that the field 0 should be of a different color or shade from that of the body A or at least that portion which comes under the field G.
Our invention provides efficient means for quickly identifying the pattern and for keeping such patterns together as form a set and preventing the intermixing of patterns of difierent sizes. The facing which carries the identifying-symbol D is permanently connected with the body A of the pattern, and owing to the producing of the symbol D by perforations it becomes possible to print an entire set of facings for all kinds of patterns without any reference to the identifying-symbol-that is, all such facings will be printed alike for all sizes of a pattern and the different identifying -symbols will then be produced separately by perforations, as required.
We claim as our invention The label B provided with a field 0 distinguishable in color from the body of the label and with perforations through said field, said perforations forming a symbol or figure visible on the said field, as specified.
ROBERT S. OLOUGHLIN. JAMES F. BIRMINGHAM.
