MAGNETO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,687, dated April 28, 1903. Application filed February 26, 1903. Serial No. 145,227. (No model.)
of Brookline, county of Norfolk, and Statev of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Magnetos, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
The present invention relates to a magnetobox for telephones, and is mainly embodied in a fastening device and separator for the upper part of the permanent magnets which constitute the field member of the magneto.
It has been customary heretofore to secure the magneto in the-box solely by means of screws which extend through the bottom of the box into the frame or support for the magneto, and under ordinary conditions such a fastening device is sufficient, since the box when in use is in a vertical position, so that there is nothing which will tend to displace the magnets. In shipping, however, the box is liable to be laid on its side or dropped or jarred, and the Weight of the magnets is such that a heavy strain is brought to bear upon the fastening-screws, the result being that the bottom of the box is frequently split, especially if the box has been subjected to the jarring consequent upon rough handling.
It is the purpose of the present invention to provide means for securely fastening or supporting the magnets near the top, so that they will be securely held in position regardless of the position in which the box is placed.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for separating the magnets from each other near the top, so that they will stand substantially parallel throughout without danger of displacement.
To these ends the device embodying the invention consists in a supporting member having a face adapted to lie in contact with the back of the box and to be fastened thereto, as by screws, and a socket portion provided with a recess for each magnet of the magneto, between which recesses lugs are interposed to project between adjacent magnets, one or more of said lugs being provided with a screwthreaded opening to receive a fastening-screw, the head of which or a washer under the said head overlies the inner surfaces of two adjacent magnets, which are thus clamped to the socket-piece.

The permanent magnets ct of the magneto are herein shown as supported, as usual, on a base or supportc, which rests upon the lower wall or bottom A2 of the magneto-box A, the magneto being fastened in the said box by means of screws d3, which project through the bottom A2 of the box into the frame or base d2. Itis the purpose of the present invention to dispense with the undue strain brought to bear upon the screws a3 when-the box is not in a vertical position, and for this purpose the upper ends of the magnets ct are secured to a socket-piece Z2, having a flat bearing-surface which is adapted to lie against the rear wall Aof the magneto-box and to be secured thereto, as by screws b2. The said socket-piece is provided, as shown, with flanges b3, which engage the outer surfaces of the outer magnets, and lugs or projections b4, which project between adjacent magnets and serve to-separate and position the same relatively to each other. The said socket-piece may also be provided with anges b5, which project over thejtops of the magnets, so as to hold the same more securely.
The magnets are connected with or fastened to the said socket-piece by means of fastening devices, such as screws c, which project `between adjacent magnets into threaded openings Z140 in the lugs b4, the said screws preferably being provided with washers c2, so as to afford a good bearing against the inner surfaces of adjacent magnets. These fastening devices or screws serve to clamp the several magnets firmly to the socketpiece, the lugs b4 also serving as separators for adjacent magnets, while the socket-piece itself is fastened to the back wall of the magneto-box, it being obvious, therefore, that the heavy magnets and armature and gears connected therewith are thus firmly fastened in the box at two separate points, so that there is no twisting or bending strain brought to IOO bear upon the fastening-screws when the box piece; and fastening devices foreecuring said is in abnormal position and roughlyhandled. socket-piece to the Wall of the magneto-box,
