ANGUS DEATON, OF OONNERSVILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CENTRAL MFG. 00., OF OONNERSVILLE, INDIANA, A CORPORATION OF INDIANA.
CARWNG=TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 726,516, dated April 28, 1903. Application filed October 20, 1902. Serial No. 127,909. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that LANdUs DEATON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Connors ville, in the county of Fayette and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carving-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a neat, efficient, and easily-handled carvingtool which may be readily used upon large or small work.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is an axial section, Fig. 2 a perspective, and Fig. 3 a section on line 3 8 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings I have shown my invention embodied in a tool especially designed for use in producing the carved molding on carriage or Wagon bodies and all kinds of carved moldings; but said tool is not necessarily limited to such use. This tool consists of a tubular body 10, preferably formed of suitable bearing material, such as phosphor-bronze or the like, provided with a tapered bore, in Which is journaled the tapered portion 11 of a drive-shaft 12, the outer end of said shaft being of such form as to be received in the chuck of an ordinary flexible driving-shaft or any other suitable driving means. (Not shown.) Shaft 12 is provided adjacent the large end of portion 11 with threads 13, upon which are threaded check-nuts 14 14, the inner end of which forms an abutment or collar for the adjacent end of the tubular body 10. The small outer end of shaft 12 is provided with threads 15, upon which is threaded a suitable cutter 16, said cutter engaging the opposite end of body and being held in place by check-nut 17. Nut 17 is provided at its inner end with a reduced portion 17, upon which is revolubly mounted a roller 18, which lies immediately adjacentcutter 16. That portion of bodylO which is adjacent cutter 16 is reduced, as at 10, and embracing.
this reduced portion is a split collar 19, provided with a pair of registering fingers or arms 20 20, which are threaded, so as to be received in a tapered threaded bushing 21,
carried by a suitable handle 22. Collar 19 is provided with a peripheral slot 23, through which passes a stud 24, said stud passing into the portion 10 of body 10. Revolubly mounted upon stud 24 is a roller 25, the periphery of which at one point lies adjacent the cutter 16. The position of roller 25 relative to the handle 22 may be changed by loosening handle 22 uponfingers 20 and swinging collar 19 upon portion 10 of body 10, as indicated in Fig. 3, and then clamping the collar upon the body by screwing up handle 22.
In operation the instrument is held by one hand claspingbody 10 and the other hand grasping handle 22, whereupon cutter 16 may be brought into engagement with any desired portion of work, while rollers 18 and 25 serve as guides and allow easy shifting of the instrument.
I claim as my invention 1. A portable carving-tool'consisting of a tubular body, a shaft journaled therein, a cutter carried by said shaftya guide carried by the body adjacent the cutter, and a handle secured to said body and adjustable in relation thereto and with relation to the guide, for the purpose set forth.
2. A portable carving-tool consisting of a tubular body, a shaft journaled therein, a cutter carried by said shaft, a guide-roller carried by the body adjacent the cutter, a guide-roller carried by the shaft adjacent the cutter, and a handle adjustable with relation to the guide-roller carried by the body.
3. A carving-tool consisting of a tubular body, a shaft journaled therein, a cutter carried by said shaft, a guide-roller carried by said shaft adjacent the cutter, a guide-roller carried by the body adjacent the cutter, a split collar embracing the body, and a handle carried by said split collar and adapted to clamp the same upon the body.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set myhand and seal, at Oonnersville, Indiana, this 17th day of October, A. D; 1902.
