ESL- f EA j frim essesp WAA- Inventor UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY A. DAVIES, OF NE\V HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
GAM E APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 726,262, dated April 28, 1903.
Application filed August 29,1902.. vSerial No. 121,466. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARYA. DAVIES, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements-in Games, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying draw lngs.
My invention relates to improvements in games, and has for its object, among other things, to provide a game which while simple and inexpensive in construction can be played either indoors or out of doors and calculated to furnish an exhilerating sport and afiord considerable amusement'both to the spectators and the players. To these and other ends my invention consists in the game having certain details of coustructionand combination of parts, as will he hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals designate like parts in the several figures, Figure l is a plan view of the spiral court; Fig. 2, an elevation thereof; Fig. 3,
- the hoop, and Fig. 4the hoop guide or paddle.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates a strip of wire-netting or other suitable material which is arranged in spiral form about a common center, leaving an open space between the several convolutions. This netting may be secured to the ground by stakes or other convenient means and be of any length and arranged in any number of convolutions.
The numeral 2 designates the hoop, which is of the same type as those used by children for rolling, and 3 is the guide or paddle by which the hoop is pushed along and held in its upright position.
thenaddle 3, which is grasped in the hand by the handle 4 from the outside through the spiral court formed between the several convolutions of the member 1 until the center of the court is reached. For each time that the hoop is rolled into the center of the court from the outside one point is scored, and the person securing the greatest number of points in a given period is the victor. This mode of playing the game is modified somewhat by including in the game the return of the hoop through the court from the centerto the outside.
I am aware that it is not new to use a hoop and a paddle to guide the same in a game; but so far as I am aware no one has heretofore used a flexible strip to make a spiral court of varyingwidths from one end of the same to the other and combined with it a hoop and paddle to providemeans for a contest, substantially as herein described. I do not, therefore, claim my invention broadly, but limit myself to the device substantially as specified. l
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Ina game, the combination with a spiral strip arranged so that when secured in place an open court will be formed of varying widths from the exterior to the center thereof; of a hoop to be rolled in said court and a paddle for guiding said hoop, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' MARY A. DAVIES.
