AUGUST JOHNSON, OF BUTTE, MONTANA.
MINING COLLlMN-BAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,066, dated April 21, 1903.
Application filed October 22, 1902.; Serial No.- 128,240. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be itknown that I, AUGUST JoH soN, a cili-' zen of the United States, residing at Butte, in the county of Silverbow and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mining Column-Bars, of which the following is a specification;
My invention relates to improvements in mining column-bars-thatis tosay, a column bar or support used when mining with-a drill to facilitate the use of a drill in mining.
The object of my invention is the provision of a column-bar which can be quickly adjusted for use and which will be strong and durable, simple and inexpensive of construction, and thoroughly efficient andpractical for the intended purpose.
With this object in view my invention consists of an adjustable column-bar embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts snbstantiallyas disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a column-bar for mining constructed inaccordance with and embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 represents a side elevation, partly in sections, to show interiordetails. Fig. 3'rep resents a detail view of parts of my columnbar detached.
In the drawings, the letter A indicates the base or foundation of my column-bar, which is a casting having the vertical tubular stem 13, the enlarged chamber 0, having the opening D on one side covered by a curved metal dust-cap E, and on the other side me casting is formed with the horizontal bearing F, and on the inner side of its base portion is formed with aVeI-tical'disposed bearing G, and the outer face of the base portionisformed with the ribs H, the purpose of which is to engage the surface and hold the base portion from" turning. In the vertical bearing is mounted thelower end of the screw'J, which. is keyed at said lower end, by means of the key -K,'to
the beveled gear-wheel L, which'beveled gearwheel meshes with the vertical driving beveled pinion M, mounted on the short horizon tal shaft N, said shaft carrying at its outer end the disk 0, provided with a" series of openings P to receive the end of the handlever Q, the purpose of which is to revolve the driving-pinion which revolves the beveled gear, which, being connected to the screw, rotates the screw and adjusts the nut R, which is connected by means of the lug S, fitting in opening T of the column-bar U, and thus adjusts the column-bar up and down or vertically to' suit the place where it is to be used. The column bar is of the desired length and is preferably a hollow tube, and in the upper end of said column-bar is secured the cap V, provided with the ribs W, which serve in connection with the ribs on the base of the casting to secure the columnbar firmly in position by said ribs cutting into the surface where the operation of min-.
ing is being performed. From this construction it will be seen that my bar can be placed in position for use and adjusted instantly to suit the size or space in which it is to be employed and that it will form an absolutely perfect support for the wall and enable the drill to be used with ease. It will also be noticed that my column-bar iscomposed of few parts, rendering the construction extremely simple and inexpensive, very strong and 'durable, and entirely efficient in every respect. It will also be understood that the working parts of my column-bar are protected from dirt or dust and can be easily oiled, when desired, by removing the dust-caps, which is a feature of paramount importance in such a .device.
1. In a mining column-bar, the combination of the hollow base or support having the opening on one side and the bearing on the other side, the protecting-cover for the opening, the shaft mounted in the bearing, the bevel-pinion on the inner endof the shaft,
the disk on the outer end of the shaft having openingstomeceive a lever for turning said disk, the vertical screw mounted in the hollow base, the bevel-gear therein meshing with' the bevel-pinion, and. the column-bar connected, with said screw and adjusted thereby. U
I 2. In a miners column-bar, the combination of a hollow base having securing exterior ribs, a horizontal shaft mounted in the base, means on the outer end of the shaft for turning the said shaft, a vertical disposed and a cap on the column having exterior scbevel-pinion on the inner end of the shaft, a horizontal bevel-gear meshing with said pin- In testimony whereof I affix my signature ion, a vertical screw mounted in the base in presence of two witnesses.
