PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC J. HARTFORD, OF BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS.
H UMAN-TREATM ENT' A RPARATUS SPECIFICATION-forming part of Letters lfatentflo. 726,055, dated April 21, 1903.
1; re ute-eat filed ut za'nm;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, IsAAo J HARTFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing atjBloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Human-Treatment-Apparatus, of which the following is a specific-"a tion.
My invention relates toiinprovementsin human-treatment apparatus, and refers to a device or apparatus for use in the practice of osteopathy, xthe object being the production of an apparatus which will be thoroughly efficient, practicaL'and beneficial.
'With this object in view my invention consists of an apparatus of thecharac'ter and for the purpose stated embodying novel features of construction and combination ofparts for service, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the complete apparatus. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of one member of the apparatus. Fig. 3 represents a transverse sectional view with the side walls of the apparatus having the detachable caps fitted thereto. Figs. 4 and 5 represent perspective views of the caps adapted to be applied to the side walls. v Q
My apparatus consists of the two members or parts A and A, each grooved to form a central longitudinal channelB, in which the body is adapted to rest, and the apparatus when in use is placed" upon a table or suitable platform. The member. or partA is formed with the vertical longitudinal wall 0, and the mem- A is formed with the inclined longitudinal wall 0, and the body rests in the channel, with. the said crest of said walls resting against the body along the spinal columnin order that manipulations upon the bones or muscles can be easily permitted. A member A is formed with transverse arms D, which fit in sockets or mortises E in the member A, and the member A carries an adj listing-screw F, which passes through a threaded opening G in said member and engages a threaded opening Hin member Aand bymean's'of which the two members may be adjusted, according to the size of the person to be treated and also to suit the treatment.
In Fig. 4 I show a form of cap or-cover which fits upon the edge of the member A and Serial No. 112,800. (No model.)
which has the top wall J, which is flat and straight, and the side wall K, and in Fig. 5 I show a cap or covering for the member A,
which has the raised or curved top wall L and the inclined side wall M, and these caps are used when desired to press upon the body at certain determined places, according to the treatment which the patient is undergoing, as will be understood.
In .use the apparatus is supported upon a table or platform, and the body rests in the channel, with the crestor top of the Walls bearing'along the spinal column, and, if desired, the caps may be placed upon the members, according to the character of the treatment.
It will be understood that the apparatus can be adjusted to accommodate a person of any size, and the adjustment willinsure the sidewalls bearing in a proper manner upon the person under treatment.
I claim- I 1. An apparatus for treating the hu'man body, consisting of twomembe'rs formed with a channel and adjustable laterally with reference to each other with their adjacent faces having bearing-walls at different angles, substantially as described and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. An apparatus for treating the human body, consisting of two adjustable members formed with a groove providing a channel, one member having a vertical bearing-wall and the other me mber having an inclined bearing-wall;substantially as described and for'thepurpose herein set forth.
An apparatus-for treating the human 1 body, consisting of two members having a central channel, and caps or covering fitting on said members and adapted to bear upon the body and having bearing-walls disposed at different angles, substantially as described and for the purpose herein set forth.
4. An apparatus for treating theshuman body, consisting of a base having a channel and two side walls, and caps or coversfitting on the side walls and adap'tedto bear upon the body and disposed at difierent angles with relation to each other, substantially as described and for the purpose herein set forth.
5. An apparatus for treating the human body having a channel and a longitudinal verother inclined, and an adj usting scr'ew for ad justing the members laterally with reference to each other, substantially as described and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC J. HARTFORD.
