INDICATING DEVICE FOR MUSIC-BOXES.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 725,666, dated April 21, 1903. Application filed June 27, 1902. Serial No. 113,420. (No model.)
To 60% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUSTAV A. BRAOHHAU- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Rahway, Union county, State of New Jersey,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Indicating Devices for Music- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to music-boxes of that class in which a plurality of note sheets or disks are carried successively to the playing position, and has for its object to provide simple and positively-operating means to indicate accurately which piece is in the playing position.
One form of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the indicator, the carriage, and the carriage-track, the latter appearing in section; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Upon the frame 1 of the machine are disposed brackets 2, to which are secured on each side longitudinal tracks 3, extending from front to rear. Upon these tracks is adapted to travel the note-sheet carriage. This carriage may be of any suitable construction and, as shown, comprises on one side cylindrical rollers at and on the other side grooved rollers 4, so as to compensate for any inaccuracy in the proper spacing of the two tracks. These rollers are journaled in brackets 5, depending from longitudinal bars 6, connected by cross-bars 7, which are held in place by screws 7. From the longitudinal bars 6 rise rods 8, which are spaced from each other so as to receive between them the note-sheets or tune-disks, this being a wellknown construction. Upon the front bar 7 are secured brackets 9, carrying the frame 10 of the indicator. On this frame are provided pins 11 or other suitable means for holding cards 12 or their equivalent, these cards being preferably exchangeable and being intended to bear the names or titles of the various pieces. The cards are arranged on opposite sides of the central plate 13, which has a vertical slot 14:. In front of this plate is arranged to move a pointer having two ends 15 15, one located higher than the other, and this pointer is connected by a pin 16, moving in the slot 14, with a weight or slide 17, arranged inthe rear of the frame 10. A cord or wire 18 leads upwardly from the weight 17 over a roller 19, journaled at the top of the frame 10, then downwardly to a roller 20,
which is journaled in a bracket 21, projecting from the front cross-bar 7, and finally to the rear of the box, where it is fastened to a bracket 22 or to any other suitable stationary part. In music-boxes of this class the carriage receives an intermittent movement, soas to bring different note-sheets into the playing position. It is immaterial to my present invention Whether this movement of the carriage be automatic or whether a hand operated mechanism is provided for this purpose. In an event as the carriage is shifted the position of the indicator will vary. For instance, if the carriage is moved backwardthat is, toward the bracket 22the indicator 15 15 will move downward along the plate13. As there are two ends or pointers on the indicator, only one of themis operative ata time, and indications are to be read from that pointer which is near the center of one of the cards, and not from the one which is near the edge of a card. Thus in Fig. 1 the left-hand pointer is active and the right-hand pointer 15 is inactive. It'will be obvious that with this arrangement of parts the movement of each pointer will be about one-half the height of one of the cards 12 for each feed-movement of the carriage. By the use of two pointers arranged as described I am enabled to secure a great no mber of indications with a comparatively slight movement of the indicator.
I desire it to be understood that while I have shown but one form of my invention various modifications may be made without departing from the nature of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a music-box, a traveling note-sheet carriage, an indicator-frame connected with the carriage so as to move therewith, an indicator movable on said frame, and operating means attached to the indicator and also attached to a stationary part, so as to cause the indicator to shift as the carriage is moved.
2. In a music-box, a traveling carriage, an indicator-plate, an indicator movable along said plate, a flexible connection secured to said indicator and also secured to a stationary support, and a guide engaged by said flexible connection and held to move with the carriage.
3. In a music-box, a traveling note-sheet carriage, an indicator-plate carried thereby, an indicator arranged to move along said plate, a flexible connection secured to said indicator and also secured to a stationary support, and guides engaged by said flexible connection and held to move with the carriage.
4. In a music-box, a traveling note-sheet carriage, an indicator-plate carried thereby, an indicator arranged to travel along said plate, a flexible connection having one end secured to a stationary part, guides for said flexible connection secured to the carriage and so located that said connection from its fixed end extends first lengthwise of the carriage-path, then upward, and then downward to the indicator.
5. In a music-box, a traveling note-sheet carriage, an indicator provided with a plurality of pointers connected to move in unison and operated by said carriage, and located out of alinement with each other, and a plurality of series of indicating devices with which said pointers cooperate.
6. In a music-box, atraveling note-sheet carriage, an indicator-plate provided witha vertical slot and with series of card-holding devices at each side of said slot, in combination With an indicator operated by the movement of the carriage, and provided with pointers, each of which is adapted to indicate on one series of cards.
7. In a music-box, the combination with a traveling note-sheet carriage, of an indicator operated by the movement of the carriage and provided with two pointers, and an indicator plate provided with two series of card-holding devices, one at each side of said indicator, each pointer being adapted for cooperation with one series of cards.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GUSTAV A. BRAOHHAUSEN.
