SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 725,433, dated April 14, 1903. Application filed June 10, 1902. Serial No.111,041'. (No model.) l w This invention relates to hinges; and the primary object thereof is to produce a device of this character especially adapted for use in connection with gates to gradually raise the gate in a vertical plane while the same is being opened, wherebyauy inequalities of the ground in the path of the gate are compensated for, and to overcome any sagging in the gate to permit it to be freely turned upon its hinges.
A furtherobject of the invention is to produce a hinge which is cheap, durable, and officient.
Still further objects of the invention will appear as the nature ofthe' sameis more fully understood from the following description and claims, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
The invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described'and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gate equipped with hinges embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hinge. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the hinge involving a slight modification. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal section of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal section of- Fig. 2, the movable member being broken, away.
1 designates a post or standard to which a gate 2 is hinged, and 3 a latch-post adapted to be engaged by a latch 4 to secure the gate in closed position.

The base-plate 11 has secured thereto a segmental flange 13,h'avi.ng the upperedge thereof gradually inclined from the ends of the segment to place thehighest point of the incline in longitudinal alinelnent with the pintle 8 and at Y which point the flange is provided with a depression 14, forming a stop, the purpose of which will be hereinafter fu-llyexplained.

The opposite end of said bar is horizontally disposed and provided with a bearing for the reception ofjthe pintle 8, hingedly connecting the two members. The i bar is bent upon itself intermediate its ends to form a casing 17, having walls thereof provided with alining bearings in which is journaled a shaft carrying a grooved roller 18, adapted to ride upon the inclined edge of the flange 13 when the gate is turned upon its hinges.
It is apparent from theabove description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that a gate equipped with hinges of my improved construction will, when turned I upon its hinges through the medium of the inclined edge of the flange and the grooved roller, gradually be elevatedand when the roller engages the stop let will be held in its tion are provided with grooves 19, forming roller will hold the gate in its closed position,
thereby obviating the necessity of a latch.
The roller in view of its grooved construction will remain in constant engaged relation to the flange irrespective of any tendency of the two members of the hinge working loose as a consequence of the wearing of one member which engages the pintle of the other member.
The construction of the base-plate and flange renders it possible to convert any strap-hinge having a vertically-disposed pintle into a hinge of the character above described by securing the base-plate upon the pintle, and in such instances it is not absolutely necessary to the working of the hinge To provide the movable member with a roller.
It is obvious from the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that I provide a hinge which will compensate for the sagging of a gate and for any inequalities of the ground adjacent the lower edge thereof and which will also hold the gate either in its closed or opened position.
It may be further stated that by reason of the inclinations of the flanges the gate will automatically return to its closed position if the same has not been opened a sufficient distance to place the rollers '18 in engagement with the stops 19 and that when the rollers are in engagement with the stops 1%) the gate may be automatically closed by withdrawing the rollers from such engagement.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. A hinge comprising a securing-bolt, a base-plate having a perforation and provided with a vertical flange having an inclined edge, a pintle having one end thereof reduced to provide a shoulder and adapted to extend through the perforation to permit the shoulder to lie upon the base-plate, means carried by the pintle to engage the under side of the securing-bolt to clamp the shoulder againpt the base-plate, thereby detachably securing the pintle and base-plate in applied position, and a movable member adapted to have a pivotal connection with the pintle to permit of its riding upon the vertical flange.
2. A hinge comprisinga stationary member, a base-plate provided with a flange, means for detachably securing the base-plate to the member, a movable member, and means for connecting the movable member to the stationary. member to permit of its cobpcrating with the flange.
3. A hinge comprising a securing-bolt, a base-plate provided with a vertical flange having an inclined edge, a pintle detachably secured to the stationary member and aflso adapted to secnre the base-plate in applied position, and a movable member adapted to have a pivotal connection with the pintleto permit of its riding upon the vertical flange.
