Description

UNiTEn Srafrns garanti1 Ottica,
PAUL WV. LI'IOHFIELD, OF AKRON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE GOODYEAR TIRE AND RUBBER COMPANY, OF AKRON, OHIO.
TILES.
SPECIFICATION frmingpart of Letters Patent No. 725,102, dated April 14, 1903. Application led April 21, 1902. Serial No. 103.925. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL W. LITCHFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tiles, of which the following is a specication.
My invention has relation to improvements in tile for iioors, walls, wainscots, and kindred purposes and for decks of vessels and cars.
The object of my invention is to produce a new and improved tile of the interlocking type that will be simple in construction and effective in use.
To the accomplishment of the aforesaid objects my invention consists in tile constructed as shown in the accompanying drawings, as hereinafter ldescribed and then specifically claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof.
Inv the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference-numerals in dicate like parts in the different figures, Figure l is a plan of a single tile; Fig. 2, a plan of a key-tile to be used in connection With the tile shown in Fig. l; and Fig. 3, a number of tile, on a reduced scale, laid together, showing the manner of uniting them on the iioor or wall.
Referring to the figures, l is the tile, which is in general outline a rectangle with equal sides. In each corner of this tile is a rectangular opening, vthe sides of Which are parallel with and equidistant from a line running through the center from alternate corners. These openings form seats of a key-piece 2, in form of a rectangular cross with arms of equal length, each arm being of proper size to accurately fit one of the-openings in the tile l.
The edges of the tile may be perpendicular to the faces, or the openings may be beveled at the sides from one face and at the end from the other face and the ends of the key-pieces correspondingly conformed, and as they may be of any desired thickness no edge elevation is shown. V
It follows from the foregoing construction that in laying the tile, as illustrated in Fig. 3, the tile l are laid in courses with ends and sides touching and the key pieces 2 are placed in the openings in the corners of adjacenttile. The openings in the edges of the pattern and the corners are filled to complete it with half tie-pieces cut on a line between alternate inner corners in the one case and'in the other with quarter-pieces cut on lines between adjacent inner corners.
By giving different colors to different tile and key-pieces, or like colors to the tile and different colors to the key-pieces, various patterns and effects may be produced.
Although I have shown a rectangular tile, I do not intend to thereby conform my invention to that exact form, as my invention may be used with equal utility and pleasing effect Where the form of the tile is of any polygonal shape or the edges curved.
These tile may be made of vitried or porcelain-coated blocks, india-rubber, or other material, and their surfaces may be figured or ornamented as desired; but as this latter part pertains to a diiferent class of patentable inventions it is only here suggested.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improved tile, rectangular in form, having in each corner a rectangular opening, the sides of which are parallel with and equidistant from a line running through the center from alternate corners, substantially as shown and described.
2. An improved tiling consisting of rectangular blocks having in each corner rectangular openings with the sides equidistant from and parallel witha line through the center :from alternate corners, in combination with key-pieces in form of a rectangular cross with arms of equal length, each arm being of proper size to accurately lit one of the openings in said tile, substantially as shown and described.
3. An improved corner-filling for rectangular tile-blocks having rectangularopenings in the corners with sides equidistant from and parallel with a line running from alternate corners which consists of a block one-fourth of a cross having plain parallel faces and equal rectangular arms of a size to fit said openings, and cut from two adjacent inner IOO corners to its center, substantially as shown l parallel sides to fit the openings in adjacent and described.
4f. Tiles with straight sides with openings in the corners, with key-pieces having par- 5 allel-sidedarms to enter and fit the openings in adjacent tile, substantially as shown and described.
5. Tiles having sides adapted to meet and lita the sides of adjacent bile with openings at lo their angles, and key-pieces having arms with tile, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I hereunto ser, my hand in the presence of Iawo subscribing witnesses.
PAUL W. LITCHFIELD.
