FORTUNE-Tammo ATTACHMENT. i
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 724,392, dated March 31, 1903. `Application tiled January 3, 1902. Serial No. 88,329. (No modell) To all whom t may con/cern.:
Be itknown that I, CHARLES L. I-IURD, aciti.- zen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chelsea., in the county of Suolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fortune-Telling Attachments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is the construction of a fortune-telling attachment for use in connection with coin-operated vendingmachines in order that the person to whom an article is delivered upon the introduction of the designated coin may at the same time have his fortune told.
In coin-operated vending-machines it is customary to combine three or four vending s slides and chutes in a single machine, both the Slide.
for the purpose of presenting a choice of varions different articles and to furnish a larger supply of the same articles that the machine may not so soon be exhausted. My fortunetelling attachment is therefore constructed to be automatically operated when any one of the several slides is manipulated.
Referring to the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a vending-machine supplied with my attachment. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the cylinder comprising the main part of the attachment.
The vending-machine shown is designed to be of the general construction set forth in my companion application, Serial No. 76,899, and comprisinga case 36, formed with a removable door or cover 34, and a plurality of chutes 30,
supplied with packages 31 and package-delivering slides 20, formed with projections having forks 25 pivoted thereto and by which when a slide is pushed inward a package 31 is ejected through the opening 32 and slides down into the control of the person operating Each slide is provided with locking devices, as disclosed in said application,
which are constructed to release the slide when a coin has been inserted in the coinopening 21, and thereby permit such slide to be pushed inward and its forks to eject a package.
las shown in Fig. 3.
legends extending in lines parallel with the l axis of the cylinder, and a cylinder-turning mechanism operated by the inward movement of any slide 20. The fortunes are de= signed to be Yread singly through the slot 35 in the door or cover 34,the rotation of the cylinder presenting fresh lines .of reading matter to view. My mechanism for enabling the operation of any one of the slides to rotate the said cylinder 'is constructed as follows: -Pivoted on the axis of the cylinder 1 are two arms 10, one at each end of the cylinder and caused to swing rigidly in unison by being formed from a single length of metal having a longitudinal section 11, with its extremities bent at right angles thereto to form said arms, From these arms near their juncture with the longitudinal section 11 extend the ends of the Wire 14. 15, bent into a substantially U-shaped contour, the arm-sections 14 of which are of proper length to locate the bar-section 15 a short distance in advance of the slide projections 22, the distance being such that said bar is not quite reached by a projection 22 when a slide, upon being pushed inward, is stopped by the lockingdevices. Pivotally secured to one of the arm-sections 10 is a pawl 12, constructed to engage the internally-toothed flange 5 at its end of the cylinder l. A spring 13 normally retains the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1. When now a coin is introduced in any of the slides and the latter pushed inward, its projection 22 meets and carries with it the bar-section l5, thereby swinging the arms 10 toward the chutes 30 and giving the cylinder a partial turn. This presents a'fortune'at the slot 35, which can be easily perused while the package 31 descends from the particular chute 30 whose slide is manipulated.
It will be observed that the cylinder l is supported by the entrance of its spindles 6 into bearings at the upper 'ends'of the posts 41, rising from the framework 40, and is in no way held by the case of the machine.
ln the construction of the fortune-telling cylinder I prefer to have its ends cast as separate heads 3 and 4, with the spindles 6 integral therewith. Each head is formed with a flange 5,'upon which is adapted to be tightly fitted a sheet-metal tube or drum'2,
vsaid flanges being slightly tapering, so that they'can be driven firmly into the ends of said tube and so bind the parts together. The head 4 has its fiange on the face toward the spindle projecting therefrom, and in the inner face of this flange 5 are formed the ratchet-teeth 7, engaged by the said pawl 12.
The fortune reading matter is either printed upon paper wrapped about the cylinder or lithographed upon the sheet-metal cylinder itself before it is xed in its cylindrical shape.
What I claim as my invention, and for which I desire Letters Patent, is' as follows, to wit:
1. The combination with a cylinder having xinscriptions upon its periphery, of a ratchetwheel rigid therewith, a paWl engaging said ratchet-wheel, a pair of pivotally-supported arms one of which carries said pawl, means retracting said arms, a longitudinally-movable slide having a projection, and a horizontal transversely-extended member supported in the path of said projection and connected with said arms, substantially as de-v scribed.
2. The combination with a case having the observation-slot extending for substantially the width of the case, of the cylinder revolubly supported beneath said slot and having inscriptions upon its periphery, the arms swinging on the axes of said cylinder, the U Wire terminally attached .to said arms, the slide constructed to engage said wire and lthereby swing said arms, the spring for re-
