Description
PATENTED MAR. 31, 1903.
F. H.- LIPPINGOTT.
PENCIL SHARPENER.
APPLICATION rum MAY 17, 1901.
NO MODEL.
UNITED STATES V PATENT Unmet.
FISHER H. LIPPINCOTT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PENCIL-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 724,303, dated March 31, 1903. Application filed May 17,1901. Serial No. 60,699- No modem ject the provision of a device for pointing the lead of a pencil which while being easily applied to any holder or recess shall be simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
The above objects I attain as hereinafter,
set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of an ordinary india rubber eraser holder, showing my improved sharpener as applied to the same. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the sharpener. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectionalview of the same on the line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. at is a side view, and Fig. 5 is a plan view, of the blank from which the sharpener is made.
In the above drawings, A is an ordinary cylindrical metallic rubber-eraser holder commonly applied to the ends of lead-pencils. Retained in the holder by means of the corrugations a is a piece of rubber B, and a V- shaped pencil-sharpener C is placed within the holder, the edges resting upon the upper corrugations of the rubber holder. This sharpener is stamped out of sheet metal by appropriate machinery, having in it a slot 0 with parallel sides and being of the appearance shown in Fig. 5. It is then bent into a V shape, as shown in Fig. 3, the ends 0 c of the piece being bent back, so as to be in the present instance in the same plane, although it will be understood that this construction is not necessary to my invention. The edges of said ends are preferably cut in the arc of a circle, as illustrated in the plan View of Fig. 2.
Notches c c are formed in the edges of the sharpener, there being four in the specimen shown. As the said sharpener is made so that the distance between its edges is slightly greater than the interior diameter of the rubber-holder, it is therefore retained in said holder.
In use the sharpener is placed, for example,
in a holder of the form illustrated, and a pencil requiring its lead pointed is inserted in the same, being given a rotary motion at the same time that it is pressed inwardly.
The sharpener, owing to the springy nature of the material from which it is made, presses upon the sides of the holder, and is thus prevented from rotating as the pencil is turned. As the lead of the pencil is pointed the powdered plumbago-dust collects in the bottom of the holder, and after the sharpening is finished the holder may be turned upside down and the dust shaken out, it passing through the notches 0 c provided for that purpose.
It will be understood that while I have shown my improved sharpener as applied to a cylindrical pencil or rubber holderit may with equal advantage be placed in any suitably-formed recess or convenient holder of any desired shape-as, for example, in a hole or recess in a desk or drawer, drawingboard, 850.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of a holder having within it a substantially cylindrical cavity and a V-sh aped pencil-sharpener therein, said sharpener having ends projecting at an angle to its sides, said ends being circular in outline and constructed to be retained within the holder, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a holder, a pencilsharpener therein having its sides set at an angle to each other, a slot in said sharpener, the sides of the same being parallel to each other, the ends of the sharpener bearin g upon the sides of said holder and thereby retaining the sharpener within the same, and notches in said ends constructed to allow dust from sharpening a pencil to be removed from the holder, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a pencil-holder having a substantially cylindrical cavity, of a pencil-sharpener having sides set at an angle to each other and projections extending at an angle from said sides, said projections being placed to engage the interior surface of the cavity in the holder, substantially as described.
4:. The combination of a holder and a penoil-sharpener having side portions set at an angle to each other and constructed to fit name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FISHER II. LIPPINCOTT.
within said holder, said parts having in them a paral1e1-sided slot and being provided with end projections lying in substantially the same plane With each other whereby the 5 sharpener is held in operative position Within "Witnesses:
the holder, substantially as described. WILLIAM E. BRADLEY, In testimony whereof I have signed my JOs. H. KLEIN.
