BRANDING MACHINE.
APPLICATION FILED OUT. 4, 1902L x6 MODEL.
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY GOEHRIN G, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BRAN-DING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 724,177, dated March 31, 1903.
' Application filed October 4, 1902. Serial No. 125,909. \Nomodelo To all whont it may concern:
Beitknown that I, HENRY GOEHRING, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and usefulImprovements in Branding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a branding-machine embodying a branding head or plate, means for heating the same, a carrier for said plate, a gas or other burner, and means for permitting the branding-head to be carried around to different parts of the stand on which barrels, kegs, and other articles 'to be branded are supported without twisting or fouling of any of the parts, and'other novel features are presented, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation'of a branding-machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a section of a modification of the supplying device for the heater. Fig. 4 represents a top View of a modification of the hand-lever of the machine.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a base or stand which is mounted on the rollers B, so that the same may be readily moved to difierent places, as desired. Rising from said stand and firmly secured thereto is the collar C, on which is rotatably mounted the crane D. At the base of said collar is the horizontally-extending flange E and at that of the crane D the horizontally-extending flange F. IIltGIPOSGd between said flanges are the balls G, forming bearings for said crane, whereby the same may be rotated with reduced friction, and consequently with ease. The crane is hollow and has within the same the rollers H, which form guides for the rope or chain J, the latter passing through the opening K in the upper limbs of said crane and having one end connected with the lever L and the other end with the weight or counterbalance M, which latter, as is evident, is vertically movable within the upright por tion of said crane and is inclosed therein, so as to occupy space or room on the exterior of the crane, the same being also true of the rollers or pulleys H, said counterbalance being also'guided in its rising-and-falling motions and prevented from swaying or striking surround in g objects. The lever L passes through the vertical slots'N in the crane and has its bearings mounted on the arm P, which is pivotally connected with the lower portion of the crane. Depending from said lever L is the branding iron'or head Q, the same being connected with the box R, which dependsfrom the lever L, whereby said head may be raised and .lowered. The arm P is provided with a series of openings P, arranged one above the other, in either of which the pivotal bolt P of the leverN may be fitted, so as to adapt said lever, and consequently the branding-head Q, to be raised and lowered relatively, to different heights of barrels, &c., to be branded.
Within the box R is the burner S o'fa heater, which is supplied with gas by means of the tube T, which is connected with said burner and with the neck U on thenpper portion of the crane, said neck having therein the sleeve Y,.in which is the bore V, which is in com- .being noticed that the latter is in communication with the bore Y in the sleeve Y and that the latter is connected with said neck,
so as to rotate with the same, said bore Y also communicating with the pipe Y leading from a source of air nnder pressure, which pipe has a coupling Y connected with the sleeve Y by a swiveled joint, so that while too lieu of the same there is substituted the tank Z, the same containing such gasolene or fluid and being connected with the neck U,in com munication with the bore U thereof, the latter having a pipe U extending therefrom to the burner. It will here be noticed that the pipes '1, X, and U are pliable or elastic in their nature, so as to conform to the motions of the burner when lowered or raisedby the lever L.
The operation is as follows: The barrels, kegs, &c., to be branded are placed on the stand A and the burner supplied with gas, hydrocarbon vapor, or fluid and ignited, when the head Q is highly heated by said burner. The handle L of the lever L is grasped and the lever lowered, wherebythe head is forced against the proper portion of the barrel, 850., thus branding the same, after which the lever is raised and the head accordingly cleared of the barrel, due. The crane is now turned so as to bring the head Q over another barrel, keg, &c., on the stand, when said lever is lowered and the head Q pressed against said barrel, 850., as before, and so the operations may be continued around the stand, it being noticed that the burner and its connections rotate with the crane without twisting or torsion of the parts, and the burner and head may be easily lowered and raised, owing to the counterlmlancing action of the weight M.
If desired, the lever L may be provided with a plurality of handles L as shown in Fig. 4, so that both hands of the operator may be employed for working said lever.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a branding-machine, a stand, a branding-head, a lever carrying said head, a rotatable crane mounted on said stand, said lever having its bearing on a member on said crane, a counterbalance for said head, and a flexible carrier for said counterbalance, said carrier being sustained on said crane and said flexible carrier and head being both connected with said lever.
2. In a branding-machine, astand, a branding-head, a burner therefor, a crane, a lever carrying said head and burner, and a counterbalance for said head having a flexible carrier sustained on said crane, said lever being mounted on a member on said crane and being rotatable therewith, said head and flexible carrier being both connected with said lever.
3. In branding-machine, a stand, a branding-head, a burner therefor, a lever carrying said head and burner, a rotatable crane, said lever being mounted on a member on said crane, a counterbalance for said head and a flexible carrier for said counterbalance sustained on said crane, said flexible carrier and head both being connected with said lever.
4. In abranding-machine,a hollow crane, a stand on which the same is mounted, a lever, a-branding-head and a burner therefor, and a counterbalance within said crane connected with said lever, said lever having its bearings on a member on said crane and passing freely through vertical slots therein and carrying said head.
5. In a branding-machine, a crane having vertical slots therein, a stand on which the same is mounted, a lever, a branding-head and a burner therefor, and a counterbalance on said crane connected with said lever; the latter having its hearings on a member on said crane and passing freely through said slots.
6. In a branding-machine, a stand, a hollow collar stationarily rising therefrom, a hollow crane rotatably fitted on said collar, a lever mounted on a member on said crane, a branding-tool carried by said lever, a burner forsaid tool, acounterbalance connected with said lever and mounted on said crane, flanges on the lower ends of said collar and crane, and balls interposed between said flanges.
7. In a branding-machine, a stand, a 'hollow collar rising therefrom, a hollow crane rtatably fitted on said collar and having ver-= tical slots, a lever mounted on a member of said crane and a branding-tool carried by said lever, said lever passing freely through said slots of the crane and being adapted to play therein between its place of connection with said member and tool.
8. In a branding machine, a rotatable crane, a stand supporting the same, a branding-head, a burner therefor, means for lowering and raising said head, a plurality of pipes for directing inflammable material to said burner, a neck on said crane provided with a plurality of bores which lead respectively to said pipes, stationary supply-pipes communicating with said bores respectively and a swivel connection for said supply-pipes with said neck.
9. In a branding-machine, a stand, a collarthereon, a cranevjournaled on said collar, a branding-head, a burner therefor, a lever mounted on a'member on said crane, means for supplying inflammable material to said burner, a counterbalance on said crane, and a flexible carrier for said counterbalance, sustained on said crane, said flexible carrier and head being both connected with said lever.
10. In a bfandingmachine, a rotatable crane, a branding-head, a lever carrying said head and a swinging arm mounted on a member on said crane and provided with a series of vertically-arranged openings for the adjustable connection of said lever therewith, relatively to barrels, &e., of dilferentheights.
