Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT LORAINE GAMLEN, OF BROMLEY, ENGLAND.
INCRUSTATION PREVENTIVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 724,094,'datec1 March 31, 1903.
Application filed February 18, 1902. Serial No. 94,639. (No specimens.)
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT LORAINE GAM- LEN, engineer, of 26 College road, Bromley,
, county of Kent, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Methods or Means for the Prevention and Removal of Incrustation in Steam and other Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object both the prevention and removal of incrustation in boilers, particularly steam-boilers.
In the specification of my United States application Serial No. 55,183 I have described an improved method or means for effecting this object, said method or means consisting in introducing into the boiler jute or other fibrous material reduced to the state of short fine filaments. I have since discovered that other kinds of non-vegetable fibrous material-such as wool, hair, silk, and the like, animal fiber, asbestos, and the like, inorganic or mineral fiber, in a state of division, such as that of short fine filaments, if introduced into the boiler, so as to become eventually distribu ted or dispersed throughout the boiler will also prevent incrustation, or if the boiler be already incrusted the incrustation will be removed, the fibrous material in the latter case working underneath the incrustation and scaling it oif.
The fibrous material may be reduced to the requisite state of short fine filaments by cutting, chopping, shredding, or teasing, or any other suitable processes.
It is only necessary to employ a small quantity of the fibrous material. I do not confine myself to any exact proportion; but I have found that about one -sixteenth ounce of fibrous material in the form of short fine filaments for each ounce of total hardness in the water is a suitable quantity. I prefer to introduce this quantity into the boiler every day by the boiler-feed or in any other Way and at the beginning of each day to blow down the boiler to the extent of about one inch on the water-gage, so as to remove the scale and incrustating material at the bottom.
I may mix with or use in conjunction with the fibrous material some other material.
By Way of example the fibrous material may be mixed in any desired proportion with any suitable binding material soluble in Water, such as silicate of soda, to facilitate its introduction into the boiler or for other purpose and may, if desired, be mixed or used in conjunction with any anti incrustation fluid. As it is necessary that the fibrous material should be freely distributed and dispersed throughout the boiler, the said binding material should be soluble in hot water if the mixture is intended to be introduced direct into the boiler, and it should be soluble in cold water if the mixture is to be in- What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The mode or method hereinbefore described for the prevention or removal of boiler incrustation, which consists in introducing into the boilers non-vegetable fiber which has been reduced to a fine state of division, whereby said fiber becomes dispersed throughout the water in the boiler, substantially as set forth.
2. The mode or method hereinbefore de scribed for the prevention or removal of boiler incrustation which consists in introducing into the boilers animal fiber which has been reduced to a fine state of division, whereby said fiber becomes dispersed throughout the Water in the boiler, substantially as set forth.
3. The mode or method hereinbefore described for the prevention or removal of boiler incrustation which consists in introducing into the boilers wool fiber which has been reduced to a fine state of division, whereby said fiber becomes dispersed throughout the water in the boiler, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT LORAINE GAMLEN.
