UNITED STATES PATENT 0FFICE JOHN A. BENGTSON, OF CROMPTON, RHODE ISLAND.
MORTISE-GAGE;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 724,077, dated March 31, 1903. Application filed October 16,1902; Serial No. 127,612. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. Bnnerson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orom pton, in the county of Kent and State ofRhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mortise-Gages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in a mortise-and-tenon gage; and it consists in the peculiar and novel construction of the gage, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
The object of the invention is to construct a graduated mortise-and-tenon gage so that the two sliding parts of the gage may be independently adjusted and secured in the adj usted position by one clamp-screw and marking-disks rotatably supported on the sliding rods.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved mortise-gage, showing the same adjusted to mark a tenon or mortise one inch from the end of the gage-block. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same. partly in section, showing the gage in the closed position in solid linesand thewidthgage extended beyond the face of the gage- Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view showing. the two gage-rods clamped by the said screw.
In the drawings, a indicates the gage-block, which is provided with a cylindrical bore a and has the flanged end a projecting, preferablyfin all directions beyond the gage-block a and forming the contact-face a In the contact-face a? the cavity a is formed, and in the gage-block Ct the thumb-screw 0, extends radially from the center of the cylindrical bore a. In the bore a of thegage-block the slotted tube 19 is supported, so as to slide freely longitudinally. Within the slotted tube 1) is supported the cylindrical rod 0. The thumb-screw a is in screw-thread engagement with the gage-block and has at its inner end the cylindrical projection. a", which extends through the slot b in the tube b, so that the end of the thumb-screw can bear on the cylindrical rod 0 and force the same against the wall of the slotted tube 1) and Fig. 3 is a top view,
clamp this tube b against the wall of the cylindrical bore a in the gage-block. The r0- tatable marking-disk b is provided with a tubular projection 12 which enters a socket b in the end of the tube 6. The tubular projection b is provided with a peripheral groove into which the pin b enters. The markingdisk '5 may therefore revolve freely and is held against longitudinal movement by the pin If. The marking-disk c is rotatably supported on the end of the cylindrical rod 0 by means of the screw-post 0 secured by screwthread engagement in the end of the cylindrical rod. The cylindrical rod 0 is graduated from the marking edge of the markingdisk 0', which forms the zero of the graduation. The slotted tube b is graduated from the marking edge of the marking-disk b ,the marking edge of the disk forming the zero of the graduation. The gage may be used as a widthgage by adjusting the slotted tube so that the rotatable marking-disk b is contained within the cavity a in the gage-block a.
Having thus described my invention, I- claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 4 1. In a mortise-gage, the combination with a gage-block having a cylindrical bore, a slotted tube and a rotatable marking-disk mounted in the end of the tube, of a cylindrical graduated rod supported in the slotted tube, a rotatable marking-disk supported in the end of the tube; and a clamping-screwadapted to bear on the cylindrical rod, whereby the slotted tube and rod'are held in a predetermined position, as described.
2. In a mortise-gage, a gage-block, acavity in the face of the gage-block, a graduated longitudinally-slotted tube, in combination with a cylindrical graduated rod and rotatable marking-disks mounted on the ends of the slotted tube and the cylindrical rod, and means comprising a thumb-screw whereby the slotted tube and graduated rod are held in a predetermined position, as described.
3. In a mortise-gage, the combination with the gage-block a, the cylindrical bore a in the gage-block, the cavity a, the flange a and the thumb-screw a, of the graduated and longitudinally-slotted tube 1 the rotatable name to this specification in the presence of marking-disk b the tubular projection b on two subscribing Witnesses. the marking-disk, a peripheral groove on the V 7 projection b the pin 1), the graduated rod 0 JOHN BENGTSON' and the rotatable marking-disk 0 supported Witnesses: on the end of: the rod 0, as described. ADA E. I-IAGERTY,
In testimony whereof I have signed my JOS. A. MILLER, Jr.
