SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,845, dated March 31, 1903,

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RoscoE JOSEPH Donn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Octtage Place, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Alarms and Annunciators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in alarm-annunciators used for fire-alarms, &c., in buildings of various kinds, and comprises a box carrying an electric lamp, which is mounted within the concaved portion of the bell, which concaved portion is utilized as a reflecting-surface, and in the provision of electrical connections, whereby when the circuit is closed the lamp may be lighted and the bell rung; and, further, in the provision of a stencil-plate in front of the lamp and a protecting-plate outside the stencil-plate, whereby any Wording on the stencil-plate may be seen if the light is turned on and the signal sounded.

The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and arrangements of 4 parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, specifically defined in the appended claim, and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical central sectional View of my improved signal-alarm box, showing the electric circuit connected therewith. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the box, showing a rear elevation of the sounding-signal. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the box, showing the wording on the stencil-plate.

-Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a box,

which may be of any suitable size and shape, which has mounted therein a bell M, the inner concaved surface of which is adapted to be coated with a reflecting material, and said bell is supported on bracket B, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and carries centrally an electric bulb F, which has connection with a battery, as illustrated, said battery being connected by wires with suitable push-buttons and switch mechanism, whereby the circuit may be closed for the purpose of turning on the current to light the lamp. An electromagnet B is provided,which is adapted to be thrown into electrical connection with the apparatus, whereby the hammer D may actuate the bell.

Mounted within the outer flaring portion of the bell is a stencil-disk K, upon which there may be any visible signal.

When the device is used as a fire-alarm, it

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- An alarm-signal and annunciator comprising a boxing, a bell mounted'therein having its inner concaved surfacefor'med as a refiector, an incandescent lamp supported by said bell, and a stencil-plate closing the opening in the concaved portion of the bell, and electrical means for sounding the bell and lighting the lamp to disclose a visible signal upon the stencil-plate, as set forth.
