UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE;
PERCY FOOTE COWING, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
INDUCTION APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,836, dated March 31, 1903.
Application filed October 24, 1902. $eria1No. 128,640. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PERCY FooTE Oowrne, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Induction Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings.
My invention relates to induction apparatus; and its objects are to enable any suitable translating device to be operated and supplied by novel and improved means with currents due to induced electromotive forces.
Further objects of my invention will hereinafter appear; and to these ends my invention consists in apparatus for carrying out the above objects embodying the features of construction, combination of elements, and arrangement of parts having the general mode of operation substantially as hereinafter fully described in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 1 l of Fig-l. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of the apparatus, reduced in size. Fig.
' 4: is an elevation, partly in section, of a 1nodi- Any suitable standard or fixture D may be.
provided adapted to support the translating device 0 and carry the secondary coil E, whereby said secondary coil may be placed in inductive relation with the primary coil 13, suitable electrical connection being provided between the translating device 0 and the secondary coil E.
The primary coil B may be connected in circuit with any suitable source of supply, shown in this instance as an alternating-current generator F, and according to the construction described it'will be seen that alternating currents will be induced in the secondary coil E when said secondary is in inductive relation with the primary coil B. Preferably each coil is Wound upon a suitable core, the primary being wound upon the core G and the secondary upon the core H, and the cores and their coils are suitably supported from the support A and standard D, respectively, by any suitable means. straps I.)
Preferably the cores G H are laminated, the laminations being shown more particularly in Figs. 2 and 3, the laminations extending longitudinally of the cores, and the dimensions of the apparatus may be constructed to suit the conditions to be met.
It will be seen that with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1 maximum induction is obtained, and by turning the standard D and coil E at an angle to the coil B the inductive effect may be varied, and if the translating device in use be a lamp the amount of light may be varied by varying the angle between the coils. I
In the modification of the'apparatus shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the axis of the coils is shown as substantially vertical instead of horizontal, and in this instance the cores are shown as comprising a plurality of wires, which are bent over the outside of the coil, as shown in the drawings.
By providing a portable standard for the secondary of the inductioncoil and preferably securing the coil and its core within the base of the standard a simple and readilyoperated apparatus is provided and the use of connecting wires or contacts, which are unsightly and inconvenient, is obviated. The primary may be fed with an alternating current, and the two portions of the apparatusthe primary and secondarymay be entirely separated by several inches, the nearer the better, however, and yet the electric energy will be transmitted for use in lamps or other translating devices. figuration of the coils and cores may be varied as desired, although the construction illustrated and described, as stated, has been found to operate satisfactorily and well.
In Figs. l and 5 a modification of the apparatus is shown, Fig. 4 showing a side view (Shown as The shape and the conof one of the cores H above the support A and also showing a section of the other core and coil below the support, while Fig. 5 is a partial plan View of the latter coil and core. In these drawings the Wires of the core G are outwardly bent, so that their portions (l are as far away from the central portion G as is conveniently possible in order to decrease the magnetic leakage across the gap between the central portions G of the core and the outwardly-bent portions G of the wires of the core. The coil B is shown in section surrounding the portion G of the core. In this construction the cross-section of the outerportion of the core should be equal to or greater than the cross-section of the central portion inorder to get the greatest efficiency.
In Figs. 6 and 7 a modification of the apparatus is shown in which the primary coil is secured to an arm 1, suitably hinged or pivoted beneath the table at one side, so that the primary coil may be swung from point'to point beneath the table. By this means the position of the primary maybe adjusted relatively to the table and the lamp may be placed in anydesired position fol-convenience and lighting. Any suitable means may be provided for affording provision for movement of the primary coil relatively to the table, I having shown a swinging arm by Way of illustration only.
Obviously some features of my invention may be used without others, and my invention may be embodied in widely-varying 5 forms.
Therefore, without limiting myself to the construction shown and described nor enm merating equivalents, I claim, and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, the following:
1. The combination with a support, of a primary coil mounted on one side thereof,a standard provided with asecondary coiland a trans lating device in circuit with said secondary coil and supported on the other side of said support, the construction being such that the primary and secondary coils may be placed in angular inductive relation to each other, substantiallyas described.
2. The combination of a suitable support, a primary coil movable relatively thereto, a portable standard supporting a translating device, and a secondary coil on said standard connected in circuit with the translating device, whereby the secondary coil may be placed in inductive relation with the primary coil, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a support, a primary coil adjustably mounted relatively thereto beneath the same, a portable standard provided with a secondary coil and adapted to be supported on the top of said support, and a translating device on said standard, and electric connections between the secondary coil and said translating device, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
1 PERCY FOOTE COWING.
