ELEVATOR-DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 723,813, dated March 31, 1903.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY BITNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Berwyn, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevator-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in doors, designed more particularly with reference to use upon the doors of elevator shafts or wells,in which it is desirable to have a free opening for the doorway of greater lateral extent than half of the width of the well and yet have the doors when opened occupy positions within the limits of The improvements herein described are capable of use in connection with other-classes of doors, but are particularly valuable in the class above mentioned.
When two or more doors sliding one alongside of the other are employed, it is desirable that there should be such a connection between the doors as to cause the latter to move together in opening or closing and avoid the jolting or jarring necessarily incident to a series of doors in which one is first'slid past its neighbor to the fullest extent and the two doors then carried onward to the open position. The doors of these elevator inclosures or wells are ordinarily made of openwork in the form of ornamental grills of expensive and elaborate designs, and it-is exceedingly desirable that the means employed to connect the respective doors should not be exposed to view and should not interfere with the open-work design. The devices described herein are peculiarly adapted to these various requirements, because in the closed or normal position of the doors all of the working parts lie behind the marginal framework of the door and doorway and parallel therewith, so that they cannot be seen from the outside of the elevator-inclosure.
The invention consists in the combination, with the elevator-doors and the inclosure, of connecting devices between the doors and the inclosure containingcertain novel features or characteristics, which will be definitely pointed out in the claims.
The preferred construction is shown in the drawings by means of five figures, of 'which Figure 1 is an inside elevation of a portion of an elevator-inclosure, showing a portion of the stationary part of the inclosure and two sliding doors -closing an opening. therein. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section in line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing a plan view of the tops of the doors and the connecting devices. Fig. 3 is an elevation similar to Fig. 1,except that the -doors are shown in the open position lying one alongside of the other. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section in line 4 4 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective showing the outer framework of the doors and the connecting devices, the grillwork being removed to disclose more clearly said connecting devices.

Upon the latter track run the hangers c c of the other sliding door 0. These two doors when extended, as shown in Fig. 1, occupy the entire opening or doorway and when moved into the position seen in Fig. 3 lie one behind the other and both back of the'stationary grill a.. A rodD, which is horizontal in" Fig. 1 and preferably in the same plane with the top of the outer frame of the door 0, is pivoted 'to the top of the rear edge of the door B at' cl and'is also pivoted at d to one end of a rod D, preferably. vertical in the position shown iii Fig. 1, said-rod D being pivoted at its oppositev end d to the door-post a of the inclosure. A strap 0 is secured to the top of the rear edge of the door 0 and running down along the edge of the same forms a slot between it and the door. The rod D is bent into a horizontal portion IOO at the top, as shown at d in Fig. 4, and this horizontal portion works up and down in the slot between the strap 0 and the door C.
As before stated, when the doors are in the closed or extended position, which is shown in Fig. 1, the rod I) lies behind the upper edge of the frame of the door 0 and the rod D lies behind the post a. The view shown in Fig. 1 is from the inside of the inclosure, and it is the appearance to the observer on the opposite side or the landing side to which reference is made. Starting with the position shown in Fig. 1, the doors may be opened by taking hold of the right-hand door and pushing it toward the left. The rod D compels the door G to start toward the open position at the same time as the door B, and the rod D draws the left-hand end of the rod D downward until the rod D reaches a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 3, along the edge of the door B. In this position the doors are fully open and one lies back of the other. In closing the doors the operation is reversed, the two doors reaching the position shown in Fig. 1 simultaneously.
The particular construction may be varied to a considerable extent and is therefore not essential to the invention, broadly construed.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten t-- 1. The combination with the framework of an inclosure having a doorway therein, of two parallel sliding doors adapted, when extended, to close the opening and when opened, to
slide one alongside of the other, and a connection between thetwo doors and the inclosure consisting of a substantially horizontal rod pivoted at one of its ends to one of the doors, a second rod substantially vertical pivoted at one end to the other end of the horizontal rod, a sliding means of engagement be tween the rods and the second door at the pivotal point between the two rods and a pivotal connection between the other end of the second rod and the inclosure, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the framework of an inclosure having a doorway therein, of a pair of sliding doors adapted to close the same when extended and moving from that position to one in which they lie one alongside of the other and both behind the inclosure and aconnecting device between the doors and the inclosure consisting of a horizontal rod pivoted at one end to one of the doors and lying behind the framework of the other door, a second rod substantially vertical pivoted at one end to the free end of the first rod and at the other end to the inclosure and lying behind the door-post of the latter and a sliding means of engagement between the second door and the rods adjacent to the point at which said rods are pivoted together, substantially as described.
3. The combination with the framework of an inclosu re having a doorway therein, of two parallel sliding doors moving one alongside of the other, extending across the doorway when in their closed position and lying one back of the other and both back of the inclosure, when in their open position, a horizontal rod pivoted to the rear edge of the first door, back of and in line with the framework of the second door and extending to the rear edge of the second door, a vertical rod pivoted to the inclosure behind the door-post and be tween it and the second door, means providing a slot along the rear edge of the second door and a pivotal connection between the free ends of the two rods, extending through and working up and down in said slot, substantially as described.
4. The combination with the framework of a suitable inclosure having a doorway therein, of two suitably supported and guided parallel sliding doors adapted when extended, to close the doorway and when opened, to slide one alongside of the other, and alongside of the inclosure and means for enforcing simultaneous movement of the two doors at different speeds consisting of a substantially horizontal rod pivoted at one end to the first door adjacent to the rear edge thereof and having a sliding engagement at its other end with the second door adjacent to the rear edge of said second door and sliding in a substantially vertical line, and means for moving said end in sliding engagement with the second door when the doors are opened or closed so that as the doors are opened, said rod is moved from a substantially horizontal, to a substantially vertical position and when the doors are closed, said rod is moved from said vertical position back to the horizontal position, substantially as described.
