PATENTED MAR. 24, 1903.
H. HUSTON'. ATTACHMENT FOR BABY GARRIAGBS.
APPLICATION PILEDAPB. 19, 1902.
.NO MODEL,
Q/Vihmawo UNTTEI) STATES HOWARD HUSTON, OF S PATENT OFFICE.
MITH CENTER, KANSAS.
ATTACH M ENT FO R BABY-CARRIAGES.
.ePECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 723,7 77 dated March 24, 1903.
Application filed April 19, 1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD HUSTON, a citizen of the United States of America, residingat Smith Center, in the county of Smith and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Baby-Carriages, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in attachments for babycarriages, and has for its primary object to construct a device adapted to be attached to the wheel of a carriage of the class described, in order that when the carriage is not being wheeled along a backward and forward movement may be imparted thereto by footpressure on the attachment. I
To this end the attachment consists of a treadle-like form of device which is suitably connected to the spokes of the wheel and at its outer edge is supported by a rocker, so that when foot-pressure is applied thereto in the same manner as operating a treadle the carriage will be moved backward and forward. The device is so constructed as to be readily attached to and detached from the wheel at will.
The invention consists, therefore, in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described and then particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and in describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like no merals of reference will be employed to indicate like parts throughout the difierent views, in which v Figure l is a detail perspective view of my improved device attached in position on a wheel, the latter being partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device, showing the wheel in section; and Fig. 3 is a top plan View of a slightly-modified form of construction.
The attachment consists of a treadle 1, which may be of the skeleton or open framework, as shown. This treadle conforms in curvature to the wheel-rim, and at its outer Serial No. 103,718. (No model.)
end or edge it is supported by a rocker 2, while at its inner edge it is suitably connected to the wheel, )referably by means of books 3 3, connecting with the spokes 4 of the wheel. One or more ol'these hooks may be pivoted to the treadle, as shown, for the central hook and the other made integral or rigid with the frame, though these features are such as maybe varied at will in the construc- 11011.
With the construction as shown it will be observed that the device may readily be connected to the wheel by placing the end hooks 3 around the spokes 4 some distance from the rim of the wheel and allowing the device to descend, so that the hooks will tighten on the spokes, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Where the central hook is pivoted, as shown in this construction, it may then be moved into engagement with the spoke by hand.
In Fig. 3, which shows a slight modification, the end hooks 3" each embrace two spokes, while the central hook 4 is rigid with the treadle 1. Otherwise this construction is the same, except for the design of the treadle, which is immaterial. r
In operation the operator places the foot on the treadle and by heel-andtoe pressure thereon rocks or causes the carriage to move backward and forward, as will be readily apparent.
It will be observed that the device may be quickly attached to the wheel or removed therefrom, and movement to the carriage is easily imparted, since the device is supported at the inner. edge by the wheel and at its outer edge by the rocker.
While-I have shown the device attached to a portion of a wheel designed as a baby-carriage wheel, yet it will be observed that the same may be attached to various devices-e such' as go carts, cradles, chairs, and the likean(l that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A device of the type set forth, comprising a body portion, hooks formed integral IOO the under face of the said treadle at a point adjacent the outer edge thereof. no
In testimony whereof I mix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
HOWARD HUSTON.
with the inner edge of the said treadle, and a curved rocker secured to the under face of the said body portion at a point adjacent the outer edge thereof.
2. A device of the type set forth comprisi ing a treadle, hooks formed integral with the I \Vitnesses: inner edge of the said treadle, a pivota11y- L. O. UHL, mounted hook, and acurved rocker secured to O. J. HAYS.
