COMPUTING-SCALE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,659, dated March 24, 1903.

I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 1
My invention relates to computing-scales; and it is the object thereof to provide a simple and convenient scale for indicating money values of articles of varying weights and prices per unit of weight.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of;
parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a View in front elevationof a scale embodying the features of my invention. Fig.

same. Fig. 3 represents a detail view of the means for hanging the price-unit beam.
In the embodiment of the present inven tion as disclosed in the accompanying drawings a suitable base 1 is employed, from which -'a standard 2 projects upwardly and supports a dial 3, having a construction similar to an ordinary spring-balance, the only diiference l being that the hand 4 on the face of the dial:
indicates money values instead of units of weight. From the dial 3 a link 5 extends downwardly to the price-unit beam 6, which is supported through suitable knife-edges 7, 'mounted on said beam near the end thereof. The opposite end of the lever 6 is supported by the knife-edges 8 through suitable connecting-links 9, extending upward to the knife-edges 10 on a lever 11. The lever 11 is supported and fulcrumed upon the knifeedges 12, which rests upon a suitable bearing or fulcrum block 13, which is secured to and made apart of the standard 2. The end of the lever 11 opposite to the knife-edges 10 is bifurcated to pass around the link 5 and 50 has other knife-edges 14 thereon, from which the pan 15 is suspended bya forked connecting-link 16.
The weight of the pan 15 is partly counterbalanced by an adjustable weight 17,as shown. The remainder of the weight of the pan is balanced by half the weight of the lever 6, which,'it will be noted, is suspended equally from the links 9 and 5.
The lever 6 is fulcrumed at a knife-edge 18, which is carried by a block 19. The said block 19 is centrally apertured and is supported by and slidably mounted upon the bar 20, which extends through the aforesaid aperture in the block. Pivoted near the ends of the bar 20 are suitable arms 21, which are connected by a rod 22, which is rotatably mounted in the outer ends of said arms and carries at each end a rigidly-fixed arm, as 21, each of said arms being formed with a foot, as 20, designed in operation to fit about a longitudinal tongue or bead, as 6, upon the upper edge of beam 6. The feet 20' are retained normally just above the lever 6, as indicated in Fig. 2, by means of springs, as 25, pressing arms 21. Pivoted on the block 19 is a small lever 23, carrying a roller 24, adapted to press on the rod 22 and bring the feet 20 down .onto the bead 6 of lever 6 and press said le- 20 will be guided in theirinovement and prevented from deviating from a vertical plane. The upper edge of the lever 6 is graduated to indicate various prices per unit of weight. The operation of the device is as follows: The scale being in balance-Pi. e., the weight 17 being adjusted so that the hand 4 of the dial stands at zero-the article to be weighed or valued is placed in the pan 15. The lever 23 is pressed down, thereby pushing the lever 6 out of contact with the knife-edge 18, and the block 19 is slid along the beam 20 until the edge 18 enters the graduation of the lever 6 indicating the desired price per unit of Weight. The lever 23 is released and the value of the article in the pan is indicated on the dial by the hand 4.

Having thus'fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent; is.
1. In a computing-scale, the combination with a suitable framework and weighing mechanism carried thereby, of a bar rigidly secured to the said framework, a vertical standard carried by said bar, a beam fulcrumed upon said standard, a weighing-pan carried by said beam, a graduated beam suspended beneath said first-mentioned beam and having one end supported thereby, and means connecting the other end of said graduated beam and Weighing mechanism, an adjustable fulcrum for the graduated beam varying the force transmitted by said graduated beam, and means carried by the aforementioned bar normally out of contact with said graduated beam adapted, when brought into engagement'therewith, to release said fulcrum from the graduated beam, substantially as described.
2. In a computingscale, the combination with a suitable framework and weighing mechanism carried thereby, of a bar rigidly secured to the said framework, a graduated beam having one end suspended from said weighing mechanism, a second beam pivotally mounted, means carried by said second beam supporting one end of said graduated beam, a weighing-pan carried by the free end of said second beam, a fulcrum mounted on the aforementioned bar for the graduated beam, and means carried by the said bar normally out of'contact with said graduated beam adapted to be brought into contact there with by mechanism carried by said fulcrum to release said fulcrum and permit longitudinal movement thereof, substantially as described. r
3. In a computing-scale, the combination with a suitable frame, of a beam carried by said frame, a graduated beam suspended below the said beam, a weighing mechanism, a weighing-pan carried by the said beam, a fulcrum slidably engaging said frame and normally contacting with the said graduated beam, means carried by the frame normally out of contact with the graduated beam but adapted to be brought into contact therewith, and means carried by the fulcrum for engaging said first-mentioned means and forcing the graduated beam out of contact with the fulcrum and permitting of the longitudinal adjustment of the said fulcrum, substantially as described.
4:. In a computing-scale, the combination with a suitable frame and an indicator, of a counterbalanced beam fulcrumed on said frame, a graduated beam operatively supported from said counterbalanced beam and the indicator, a fulcrum engaging said graduated beam, pivotally-mounted arms carried by the frame, and means for moving said armsfinto contact with said graduated beam for releasing its engagement with said fulcrum; substantially as described.
5. In a computing-scale, the combination with a suitable framework and a suitable indicating mechanism, of a beam having one end supported by said indicating mechanism, means for supporting the other end of said beam, pivotally-supported arms, means connecting said arms for making the operation thereof sim ultaneous,'means for moving and guiding said arms in a Vertical plane into contact with said beam, and a fulcrum normally engaging said beam, substantially as set forth.
6. In a computing-scale, the combination with a suitable frame and an indicator mechanism, of a counterbalanced beam fulcrumed upon the frame, a graduated beam suspended from said counterbalanced beam and the indicating mechanism, a fulcrum slidably engaging the frame and normally contacting with the said graduated beam, arms pivoted to the frame, a rod connecting said arms, arms fixed to said rod, means for moving said rod whereby said last-mentioned arms will be moved into contact with the graduated beam, and means for guiding said last-mentioned arms in their movement, substantially as described.
7. In a computing-scale, the combination with a suitable frame,and an indicating mechanism, of a fixed bar projecting therefrom, a counterbalanced beam fulcrumed upon said fixed bar, a graduated beam suspended from said counterbalanced beam and the indicating mechanism, a fulcrum slidably engaging said fixed bar and normally contacting with said beam, arms carried by said fixed bar, other arms provided with bifurcated lower ends and pivotally connected with the arms carried by the fixed bar, a rod connecting the jointed arms, and means carried by the said fulcrum forengagingsaid rod and forcing the arms into contact with the graduated beam so as to release it from said fulcrum, substantially as described.
