Be it known that I, HEMAN OsBoRNE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Springfield, in the county of Ham pden and State of Massachusetts, have invent- 'ed certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter-Workers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in shutter-workers of that class comprising a worm-wheel having on its arbor or shaft a lever connectedrwith the shutter, a worm-shaft' having a worm in mesh with the worm-Wheel, and connections accessible at the interior of the room for rotating the worm-shaft, causing the swinging of the shutter to an open or closed or an intermediate position, the mechanism of this character, as well known, having the capability of retaining the shutter in any given set position. Shutter-workers of this class have been considered more advantageous generally than other descriptions of shutter-workers, although they have, nevertheless, been open to the objection ofY being somewhat cumbr'ous, requiring nice andcareful setting up and itting on and'within the window-casing and have contained'inthe details comprising the worm-gearing, the inclosing-casing therefor, and the various connections a greater number of parts than have been really desirable, and, moreover, the aspect of the device has not been altogether sightly and pleasing.
The object of this invention is to provideY a shutter-worker which is entirely successful, satisfactory, and efficient in operation, comprising the fewest possible number of essential parts, and which parts are so constructed, arranged, and combined asto be inexpensive of manufacture, easy of assemblage, capable of ready application on and through the window-casing and in connection with the shutter, and constituting in no manner an'object of objection because of its general aspect.
The invention consists in a shutter-worker mechanism embodying novel details of construction and combinations of parts, all substantially as hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims.
The improved shutter-worker is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- -at 2 2, Fig. l.

more definitely indicates the line of section for Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing a two-part casting constituting the support and inclosure for important working parts of the device. Fig. 4 is a rear view of the principal one of the said two-part casting, showing the inwardly extending integral journallugs thereof, and the worm and sprocket-wheel shaft mounted in said lugs in section, as taken on the line 4 4, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 illustrates the detail construction of a sheave-containing bushing forming a part of the novel device, comprising, respectively, a rear view, an axial sectional view, and a front view of the bushing and sheave. Fig. 6 represents in' perspective the slotted plate to be -fastened onjthe upper portion of the blind and the-formation of the extremity of the lever of the shutter-worker which engages said slotted plate. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the aforementioned sheave-containing bushing, showing the adaptability thereof for receiving a peculiar key or wrench for screwing the bushing within the inner side of the window-casing in the setting up of the shutter-worker devices.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the views.
In the drawings, A represents the casting constituting the casing and support for the worm-wheel B,-the shaft C having thereon both the worm D, which engages the wormwheel, and thesprocketwheel E, by means of which, through chain F, theA shaft is rotated. The said casting comprises the separable portions a and a2, and the portion a consists of the iiat plate lO, having the screwholes l2, by which to screw it on the outer side of the window-casing, the outwardly-extending hood-like portion or half-shell 13, with the opposite lugs 1414, having the hole IDO or aperture therethrough and having the inwardly-extended integrally-cast lugs or ear-pieces 16 16, which constitute the journal-supports for the shaft for the worm and sprocket-wheel. The other member of the two-part casting is in the form of a shell having ear-lugs 141:a 14, so that when this halfshell a2 is matched with and under the other half-shell and secured by the screws 17 17, passed through the said matching lugs 14 and 14a, a complete and tight inclosure is provided for the worm-wheel, the axially-vertical journals of which have bearings for rotation in the socket 1S within the top of the upper half-shell13 and through the journal-hole 19 in the lower half-shell, the said worm-wheel having the hubs 20 2O within the journal members, the ends of which hubs engage the upper and lower walls of the casing and maintain the worm-Wheel steady in its proper position.
The shaft C is of about a length corresponding to the space between the journal-lugs 16 16, and the worm D is integrally cast as a part thereof, as is practicable of performance;
. but the sprocket-wheel E is forced witha driving iit, being separately made on the end portion of the said shaft. Said shaft is axially drilled within its ends, and when brought to alinement with the perforations 22 in the journal-lugs 16 the separately-provided straight round journal-studs 23 23 are passed loosely through the perforations of the journal-lugs, in which they have their bearings for rotation and with a tight driving fit into the holes drilled in the worin-shaft casting.
The casing, screwed upon the outside of the building, has the lugs 16 16 and the worm and sprocket and their shaft journaled in said lugs projecting intoa mortise x, the meshing of the worm with the worm-wheel being permitted by the provision of the aforementioned aperture 15 in the face-plate 10 of the casing.
The lowerjournal of the wormwheel,which is extended down,through,and below the casing at the exterior of the building, has rigidly aixed thereto the horizontal lever G, of suitable length, the lower extremity of which is downwardly turned and formed with the neck 25 and enlargement 26 therebelow, and this neck downturned extremity of the lever engages in and through the -slot 27 in the horizontal member 28 of an angular plate d, the vertical member 29 of which is screwed to the face of the blind. This connection permits the lever to be swung and the blind to be `swung thereby with all ease and freedom,
forwardly through the hole or openingg/ therefor in the window-casing through the sheavecontaining bushings L L, the chains having rolling contact over the tops of the sheaves f and hang therefrom downwardly on the face of the window-casingwithin the room for convenient grasp, being properly guided by the said sheaves. One extremity of the chain when downwardly drawn will operate the shutter-worker to open the shutter, and the other extremity serves as the medium of connection for closing the shutter. The said sheave-coutaining bushingsare constructed in the form of tubular castings externally screw-threaded, and the sheaves are placed therein with their axes at right angles to the axes'of the bushings, the journal-rods]c2 on v which the sheaves have rolling supports being driven through the opposite walls of the bushing tubes. The tubular bushings at their outer ends are internally thickened, as indicated at t' t', so that the outer-end opening of each bushing is of squared form and adaptable to receive the correspondinglyformed prongs e of the wrench or key (shown in Fig. 7) to facilitate the screw engagement of the bushings in holes bored therefor in the front of the window-casing. When these bushings are screwed in liush with the front of the casing, they do not disgure thevinterior finish of the room.
inasmuch as the chain has a tendency to jump and buckle in and relatively to its engagement with the sprocket-wheel and irrespective of whether the two courses of the chain are carried to the bushings arranged in a horizontal line, as indicated in Fig. 2, or arranged one over the other, as they may be, if preferred, I provide as an expedient to prevent the jumping and buckling of the chain and the rendering inoperative of the device a simple metallic ring m, which straddles loosely over the two courses of the chain more or less near to the sprocket-wheel and which is surprisingly efficacious and adequate in its chain constraining effect and which serves the desired purpose fully while other apparently more manifest expedients to the desired end have failed. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

aperture, the chain, an intermediate looped portion of which encircles the sprocket-wheel, and a pair of sheaves for application at the inner face of the window-casing to and over which the chain is extended from above and below the sprocket-wheel, substantially as described.
2. In a shutter-worker,in combination,a single casting comprising a face-plate l0 having an external, downwardly-open half-shell 13 with the lugs 14, an aperture 15 and rearwardly-projecting journal- lugs 16, 16, the separable lower half-shell having the lugs 14a to match with the aforenamed lugs 14, and both shells having the journal- sockets 18, 19, and the worm-wheel, the arbor of which is journaled in and through said sockets, and has at its lower end the lever adapted for operating connection with the shutter, the shaft (3journaled between said lugs across said aperture, and having the sprocket-wheel, and the worm which meshes said worm-wheel through said aperture, the chain, an intermediate looped portion of which encircles the sprocket-wheel, and means for guiding the two outer portions of the chain through and to the interior of the window-casing, substantially as described.
3. In a shutter-worker, the combination with the casing, a worm-wheel and worm-shaft therewithin, said shaft having a sprocketwheel thereon and the worm-wheel having on its arbor the shutter-operating lever,of a chain, an intermediate looped portion of which engages around the sprocket-Wheel, and double chain-guiding devices each consisting of an externally-screwthreaded tube having a sheave journaled therein and having its outer end opening of squared formation for the reception therein of a key, substantially as described.
4. In a shutter-worker, in combination, the casing, the worm-wheeljournaled therewithin and having connected thereto the shutteroperating lever, the shaft having the worm aperture,
and a sprocket-wheel, the sprocket-chain, an intermediate loop of which is passed around the lever, means for guiding the opposite courses of the chain in proximity t-o and through the window-casing and a ring encircling the two courses of the chain within the window-casing, and between the sprocketwheel and the chain-guiding sheaves f, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. In a shutter-worker, in combination, a
casting comprising a face-plate having an external, downwardly-open, half-shell, an aperture, and rearwardlyprojecting journallugs 16, 16, the separable lower half-shell secured on the outer side of the face-plate and to match with the aforenarned half-shell, the arbor of which is journalcd in and through said sockets, and has at its lower end the lever adapted for operating connection with the shutter, the shaft mounted between said lugs 16 across said aperture, and having the axial holes drilled within its two ends, the journalstuds 23, 23, passed looselythrough perforations therefor in the lugs 16, and with a tight driving t i'nto the said axial holes in the shaft, having the sprocket-wheel, having a driving fit on the said shaft and the worm; which meshes said worm-wheel through said formed integrally with said shaft, the chain, an intermediate looped portion of which encircles the sprocket-wheel, and a pair of sheaves for application at the inner face of the window-casing to and over which the chain is extended from above and below the sprocket-wheel, substantially as described. v
