`Be it known that I, DANIEL H. HOGAN, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Athol, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Sharpening Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pencil-sharpening machines.
The object of the invention is to construct a machine of this class so that during the operation of sharpening the centering of the pencil with absolute accuracy will be secu red, so that when the sharpening operation is completed the sharpened end of the pencil will taper in a uniform manner and a perfect point will be secured.
A further object of thefinvention is to construct a machine of the class above referred to with means forming an automatic feed for the pencil during the operation of sharpening, and further providing the machine with means for automatically revolving the pencil during the operation of sharpening, which in connecti'on with the centering means will insure the sharpening of the pencil in a uniform manner, as well as obtaining a perfect point.
The invention further aims to construct a pencil-sharpening machine which shall be simple in its construction, strong, durable, elcient in its operation, and comparatively inexpensive to set up.
To this end the invention consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointedout in the claims hereunto appended. y
In describing the invention in detail reference is hadto the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the machine. Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 denotes the base of the machine, which, as shown, consists of a rectangular frame, although any preferred form of base may be employed.
The reference-n umeral 2 denotes a horizontally-extending plate provided with openings 3 and a vertically-extending plate 4 integral therewith. The plate 4 is also provided with openings through which extends a suitable fastening means, as at 5, for securing the plate 2 to one side of the base 1. Through the openings 3 of the plate 2 is adapted to extendV a suitable fastening means for securing the said plate 2 and machine to a suitable support. (Not shown.) Integral with the plate 4 is an upwardly-extending supporting-standard 6, provided with a pair of horizontally-extending bearing-sleeves 7 8. Within the sleeve 7 is mounted a driven shaft 9, carrying on its outer end a pinion 10 and at its inner end connected to an eccentric 11, integral with the outer face of the web 12 of the grinding-drum 18, the latter having its rim transversely slitted, as at 14. The web 12 of the drum 13 consists of a single piece of material having one end formed with a pair of outwardly-converging arms 15 16, which are formed integral with the inner face of the rim.

Within the sleeve'S of the standard 6 is adapted to be mounted the bearingstud 19, which carries the sprocket-wheel 20, meshing with the pinion 10. The bearingstud 19 extends through the sprocket-wheel 20 and carries a crank-arm 21, to which is secured the handle 22. When the bearing-stud 19 is revolved through the action of the crankarm 21 and handle 22, the sprocket-wheel 20 is carried therewith, imparting thereby motion to the pinion 10, rotating the shaft 9, and revolving the grinding-drum 13.
The periphery of the rim of the grindingdrum 12 has mounted thereon a strip of abrasive material 23 of any suitable character and which is secured to the periphery of lthe drum IOO abrasive material through the slit 14, the ends being secured between the bearing-plate 24 and cam-lever 25, the cam-lever 25 binding the ends of the strip of the abrasive material against the bearing-plate 24. The bearingplate 24 is formed with a supporting-arm 26, extending from one side thereof, and which carries the pivot 27, uponwhich is mounted the cam-lever 25. The bearing-plate 24 at its lower end terminates in a screw-threaded shank 28, which extends through a'keeper or bracket 29, secured to the inner face of the web 12. The screw-threaded end of the shank or stem 28 carries an adjusting-nut 30 for increasing or decreasing the tension of the abrasive material upon the periphery of the grinding-drum 12.
The reference-n umeral 30 denotes a bracket connected to the inner face of the web and between which and the keeper or bracket 29 the adjusting-nut 30 is arranged. By operating the nut 30 in either direction the bearingplate and cam-lever will be moved toward or away from the inner face of the rim of the grinding-drum, so as to increase or decrease the tension of the abrasive material upon the periphery of the drum 13.
One side of the base 1 is provided with a bearing 3l for the rock-shaft 32, which extends across the base 1 and to its outer end has secured thereto a collar 33, bearing in a groove formed in the top edge of the outer side of the base 1. The collar 33 is integral with an upwardly-extending arm 34, carrying a yoke 35, engaging the eccentric 11, connected to the web 12. The inner end of the rockshaft 32 has connected thereto an actuatingarm 36, having its free end terminating in a downwardly-extending lug 36, to which is.
pivoted an elongated pawl 37, and between the pawl and the end of the arm 36 is arranged a bearing-spring 38, which tends to keep the pawl normally in engagement with a ratchet- Wheel, to be hereinafter referred to. When the drum is revolved in the manner as hereinbefore set forth, the eccentric carried by the web of the drum will oscillate the yoke 35,
imparting a rocking movement to the shaft 32, oscillating the actuating-arm 36, imparting a reciprocating movement to the pawl 37, which will intermittently rotate a ratchetwheel, hereinafter referred to.
The reference-numeral 39 denotes a sleeve forming a pencil-holding socket, which carries on its inner end the ratchet-wheel 40, engaged and intermittently operated b v the pawl 37. The ratchet-wheel 40 may be integral with the inner end of the socket 39 or suitably connected therewith; but it is provided with an opening registering with the opening in the socket, so that the pencil can extend through the said socket and ratchetwheel and be engaged by the abrasive 23 upqn the grinding-drum. The outer end of the socket 39 has connected thereto an apertured plate 39', the opening thereof registering with `13 by inserting the ends of the strip of the the opening of the socket, and this plate eX- tends down below the socket and has loosely connected thereto an apertured auxiliary plate 39h, to which is attached the grippingarms 41 41', the former being fixed to the plate 39b by means of the fastening means 41b and the latter pivotally connected thereto, as at 41C. The gripping-arm 41 is actuated by means of the spring 42, the latterbeing connected at one end to the fastening means 39b and having its other end bent to engage the lower portion of the arm 41'. The grippingarms are provided near their top inl their inner edge with a notch 43 in alinement with the opening through the plate, socket, and ratchet-wheel. The notches are arranged opposite each other and are adapted to engage the pencil 43. The socket 39 is supported by and mounted for rotation within a sleeve 44. The spring 44 is provided to cause frictional engagement between the ratchet-wheel and sleeve 44. The spring 44' engages the plate 39' and the sleeve 44, as Well as surrounding the socket 39. The sleeve 44 is carried by the vertical extension 45 of the feedshaft 46. The latter extends across the base 1 of the machine at the front thereof outwardly at an inclination, and its end opposite to that of the extension 45 is mounted loosely within the support 47, secured to the base of the machine, the base 1 at the front end thereof being provided with a plate 48, upon which the -support 47 is mounted. The feed-shaft is adapted to partiallyr rotate and has formed in its underneath surface a groove 49, in which engages a stop-pin 50, carried by the support 47. The function of this pin 50 is to limit the movement in either direction of the feedshaft 46. The support 47 is further provided with a lug 51, to which one end of the coilspring 52 is secured, and the extension 45 is also provided with a lug 53, to which the other end of the coil-spring 52 is secured. The coilspring 52-is adapted to be mounted upon the feed-shaft 46, and its action is to retain the socket normally toward the grinding-drum 13, so that when the pencil is mounted in the socket the end thereof will bein engagement with the abrasive material of the drum.
The reference-numeral 54 denotes a vertically-extending stop-arm, which is secured to the support 47. This arm is adapted to prevent the end of the pencil being moved past the edge of the drum, and, further, when it is desired to sharpen the pencil with a blunt end the end of the pencil is jammed against the arm 54. The feed-shaft, as well as the socket, is arranged at an inclination, so the pencil when it is ground away in a tapering manner will always be engaged with the abrasive material of the drum.
During the operation of sharpening the pencil is mounted in a pair of fixed bearing-arms, so that the pencil will be sharpened in a uniform manner. These xed bearing-arms consist of a pair of uprights 55 56, each provided ynear its top with a notch 57 and connected to- IOC) when carried by the socket 38 during thesharpening operation will always be seated in the notches of the arms 55 56.
The operation of the device is as follows: Assuming that the pencil has been inserted in the socket through the sprocket-Wheel 40, s o that the end of the pencil will engage the abrasive material on the grinding-drum, the sprocket-Wheel 2O is rotated by means of the crank 21 and handle 22, imparting motion to the pinion lO, which in turn rotates the shaft 9 and revolves the grinding-drum 13, causing the abrasive material thereof to grind away the end of the pencil. During the rotation of the drum 13 the eccentric 12 carried thereby will oscillate the yoke 35, rocking the shaft32 and the actuating-arm 34, reciprocating the pawl 37, which will ride up and engage with the teeth of the ratchet-Wheel 40, intermittently rotating the same, as Well as the socket 39, and imparting a like motion to the pencil carried by the socket. The action of the spring 52, carried by the feed-shaft, will force the socket inwardly and keep the end of the pencil in engagement with the abrasive material upon the grinding-drum and also keep the pencil in engagement with the fixed bearing-arms 55 56. The gripping-arms 41 41', owing to the action of the spring 4, Will suitably secure the pencil within the socket, so that it will rotate simultaneously With the socket when the latter is intermittently rotated through the action of the pawl 37. The function of the spring 44 is to prevent the socket 39 from turning i'n any direction except the movement imparted thereto through the action of the pawl 37. The fixed bearing-arms 55 56 have their notches concentric with the socket 39, so as to cause the pencil to rotate correctly on its axis, the position of the bearing-arms being soadjusted as to arrest the grinding of the pencil When completed. The auxiliary plate 39, carrying the gripping-arms 41 41', being attached to the plate 39, so as to move freely on its surface,
allows the pencil when gripped by the arms to be borne back closely into the fixed bearings and rotate undisturbed therein, so that a point not only truly centered but perfectly rounded is absolutely secured. The stop or adjustable arm 5() is adapted to regulate the distance of inserting the pencil through the slot to secure a sharp or blunt point thereto, as may be desired. i
It is thought the many advantages of my improved pencil-sharpening machine can be readily understood from the foregoing description, particularly in the manner of gripping the pencil during the operation of sharpening and for causingthe pencil to rotate in fixedy bearings, thus securing a centering of the pencil With absolute accuracy, so that the pencil will be sharpened in a uniform manner, and it will also be evident that I have devised a simple, novel, and inexpensive machine for sharpening pencils, and While the structural embodiment of the invention as herein disclosed is what I at the present time consider the preferable one it is evident that changes, variations, and modifications may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages, and I therefore do not Wish to restrictmyself to the details of construction hereinbefore described and as shown in the accompanying drawings, but reserve the right to make such changes, variations, and moditications which come properly Within the scope of the Aprotection prayed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a machine for sharpening pencils, mechanism for clamping a pencil during the sharpening thereof, mechanism for intermittently rotating said clamping mechanism, a pair of vertically extending notched arms forming fixed bearings for the pencil-:during the sharpening operation, means forret'aining the pencilin the bearingsduring the'sharpening operation, means for sharpening the pencil, and mechanism for operating the said sharpening means and the means for intermittently rotating the clamping means.
2. In a machine 'for sharpening pencils, a pair of vertically-extending notched arms forming fixed bearings adapted to receivethe pencil, means for supporting the pencil during the sharpening thereof, means for keeping the pencil during the sharpening operation within the fixed bearings means for sharpening the pencil, and mechanism for operating the said sharpening means.
3. In a machine for sharpening pencils, a spring-pressed feed-shaft, means carried by the feed-shaft for supporting the pencil during the sharpening operation, a fixed bearing adapted to receive the pencil during the sharpening Operation, said shaft adapted to retain the pencil in the said fixed bearing, means for sharpening the pencil, and operating means for said sharpening means.
4. In a machine for sharpening pencils, a grinding-drum, an abrasive substance carried thereby, a cam-lever and bearing-plate for retaining the abrasive substance upon the drum,
means for adjusting the said cam-lever andV bearing-plate to increase the tension'of the abrasive material, operating means for said drum, means for supporting the pencil during the grinding thereof by the said drum, means engaging with the operating means for the drumand with the supporting means for the pencil to intermittently rotate the lsaid IIO supporting means, aspring-pressed feed-shaft carrying the supporting means for the pencil, and fixed bearing-arms for the pencil during the grinding operation, said shaft adapted to retain the said pencil in the fixed bearings during the grinding operation.
5. In a machine for sharpening pencils, an intermittently-rotatable mechanism for carrying the pencil during the sharpening operation, a iixed bearing arranged at each end of said mechanism and adapted to receive the pencil during the sharpening operation, means for supporting the pencilcarrying mechanism and for retaining the pencil in the fixed bearings during the sharpening operation, and means for sharpening the pencil.
6. In a machine for sharpening pencils, a grinding-drum, an abrasive material suitably connected thereto, mechanism for rotating said drum, an intermittently-operating rotatable socket adapted to retain the pencil during the sharpening operation, means engaging with the said socket and operated by the operating mechanism of the drum for intermittently rotating the said socket, a feedshaft for supporting the said socket, and fixed bearings adapted to receive the pencil during the sharpening operation.
7. In a machine for sharpening pencils, a grinding-drum having its rim transversely slitted and a web integral at one end with said rim and provided at its opposite end with converging arms integral with the rim at each side of the slit, an abrasivesubstance mounted upon the periphery of the rim and extending through the slit thereof, means carried by the Web and engaging the end of the abrasive material for securing it'to the periphery of the drum, an eccentric integral With the said web, means connected with the said eccentric for operating the said dru m,an intermittentlyrotatable pencil-holding socket, means engaging the said eccentric and with the socket for intermittently operating the same during the operation of the drum, and means for supporting the said socket.
S. In a machine for sharpening pencils, a grinding-drum having its rim transversely slitted and a Web integral at one end With said rim and provided at its opposite end with converging arms integral with the rim at each side of the slit, an abrasive substance mounted upon the periphery of the rim and extending through the slit thereof, means carried by the Web and engaging the end of the abrasive material for securing it to the periphery of the drum, an eccentric integral with the said web, means connected with the said eccentric for operating the said drum, an intermittentlyrotatable pencil-holding socket, means engaging the said eccentric and with the socket for intermittently operating the same during the operation of the drum, a feed-arm for supporting the said socket, and a pair of fixed bearings adapted to receive a pencil during the grinding or sharpening operation.
9. In a machine for sharpening pencils, a
base, a grinding-drum carried thereby, operating means for said drum, a pencil-holding socket, means for intermittently operating the said socket, a pair of xed bearings carried by the base and adapted to receive a pencil during the sharpening operation, and means for supporting the said socket and retaining the pencil in the said bearings.
10. In a machine for sharpening pencils, an intermittently-rotatable mechanism for holding the pencil during the sharpening operation,fixed bearings adapted to receive the pencil during the sharpening operation, means kfor supporting the pencil-holding mechanism with the grinding-drum and in the fixed bearings during the sharpening operation, operating means for the said drum, and means engaging with the operating means for the drum and With the ratchet-Wheel for intermittently operating the socket during the sharpening operation.
12. In a machine of the character described, a grindingdrum, an eccentric connected therewith, means connected With the eccentric for operating said grinding-drum, a rockshaft, a yoke attached to the rock-shaft and engaging the said eccentric for operating said shaft simultaneously With the operation of said grinding-Wheel, an actuating-arm carried by said rock-shaft, a pawl reciprocated by said arm, a pencil-holdin g device engaged by and intermittently rotated by said paWl, fixed bearings adapted to receive the pencil during the sharpening operation, and means for supporting the said pencil-holding devicev and for retaining the pencil Within the bearing and against the grinding-drum during the sharpening operation.
13. In a machine for sharpening pencils, a spring-pressed feed-shaft,a pencil-holding device frictionally held thereby and consisting of a socket, a ratchet-Wheel and a pair of gripping-arms, a grinding-drum, a pair of fixed bearings adapted to receive the pencil during the sharpening operation and which is retained therein through the medium of the spring-pressed feed-shaft, said feed-shaft further adapted to retain the pencil in engagement With the grinding-drum, and mechanism for rotating the said drum and intermittently operating said pencil-holding device.
14. In a machine ofthe character described, a base, a pair of vertically-extending arms secured to the base and forming fixed bear- IOO IIO
ings and adapted to receive a pencil, an intermittently-rotating pencil-holding device, means for supporting the said device, means for sharpening the pencil, operating means therefor, and mechanism operated by the said operating means for intermittently r0- tating the pencil-holding device.
15. In a machine for sharpening pencils, a base, fixed bearings for the pencil during the sharpening operation, an intermittently-rotating pencil-holding device, means for supporting the said device and retaining the pencil in the said bearing during the sharpening operation, means for sharpening the pencil, and operating means for said sharpening means and intermittently rotating pencilholding device.
16. In a machine of the character described, a Spring-pressed feed-shaft, means for limitingv the movement of said shaft, an adjustable stop-arm for a pencil during the sharpening Operation, a pair of fixed bearings adapted to receive the pencil during the sharpening operation, said pencil adapted to be retained in the said bearing by the said feed-shaft, a pencil-holding device carried by the feed-shaft, means for retaining the pencil in a fixed position in the said pencil-holding device, mechanism for intermittently rotating said pencilholding device, a grinding-drum, and operating means for the said mechanism and said drum.
17. In a machine of the character described, a pencil-holding device, means for fixing the pencil in the said device, means for intermittently rotating the said device, a grindingdrum, a bearing for the pencil, means for supporting the pencil-holding device and for retaining the pencil Within the said bearing during the sharpening operation, and operating means for the said drum.
18. In a machine of the character described, a pencil-holding device, means for fixing a pencil in the said device, means for intermittently rotating the said device, a grindingdrum, a bearing for the pencil, a springpressed shaft for supporting the pencil-holding device and for retaining the pencil Within the said bearing, means for limiting the movement of said shaft, an adjustable stoparm for the pencil during the sharpening operation, and operating means for the said drum.
19. In a machine of the character described, a pencil-holding device, means for fixing the pencil therein, mechanism for intermittently rotating said pencil-holding device, means for sharpening the pencil, operating means therefor, fixed bearings for the pencil during the sharpening operation, and means for supporting the said pencil-holding device and for retaining the pencil in the said bearings and against the sharpening means during the operation 0f the latter.
20. In a machine of the character described, a drum, an abrasive material mounted upon the periphery thereof, means carried by the drum forsecuring the abrasive material theret0, an eccentric carried by the drum, operating means for the said drum connected to the said eccentric, a pencil-holdin g device, a gripping means for retaining the pencil in the said device, means operated by the said eccentric and engaging With the pencil-holding device for intermittently rotating the same, fixed bearings for the pencil during the sharpening operation, and means for supporting the pencil-holding device and for retaining the pencil in the fixed bearing and against the abrasive material of the drum during the operation of the latter.
21. In a machine of the character described, a drum, an abrasive material mounted upon the periphery thereof, means carried by the dru m for securing the abrasive material theret0, an eccentric carried by the drum, operating means for the said drum connected to the said eccentric, a pencil-holding device, a gripping means for retaining the pencil in the said device, means operated by the said eccentric and engaging with the pencil-holding device for intermittently rotating the same, fixed bearings for the pencil during the sharpening operation, means for supporting the pencil-holding device and for retaining the pencil in the fixed bearing and against the abrasive material of the drum during the operation of the latter, and an adjustable stoparm for the pencil. i
22. In a machine for sharpening pencils, fixed bearings adapted to receive the pencil during the sharpening operation, an intermittently-operating rotatable socket for the pencil, gripping means loosely connected With the socket and adapted to engage the pencil for suitably retaining itin the socket during the sharpening operation, means for supporting the socket and for retaining the pencil in the fixed bearings, means for sharpening the pencil, and operating means therefor and for said socket.
23. In a machine for sharpening pencils, a pair of fixed bearings, an intermittently-operating rotatable pencil-socket, a plate loosely carried by said socket, a rigid and a springactuated pencil-gripping arm connected to IOO IOS

means for sharpening the pencil, operating means for said sharpening means, and operating means for said socket.
24. In a machine for sharpening pencils, a pair of fixed bearings, an intermittently-operating rotatable pencilsocket, operating means for said socket, a plate secured to said socket, an auxiliary plate loosely connected to said plate, a rigid and a spring-actuated pencil-gripping arm connected to said auX- iliary plate, means for sharpening the pencil, operating means therefor, and means for supporting the socket.
25. In a machine for sharpening pencils, a pair of rigid arms forming fixed bearings for the pencil during the sharpening operation, means forming a socket to receive the pencil igor to receive the pencil during the sharpening operation, a gripping mechanism loosely connected with the socket-forming means and adapted to retain the pencil in the socket during the sharpening operation, and means for sharpening the pencil.
