Be it known that I, BYRON PHELPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Lock, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to looks; and my object is to provide a lock embodying a primary locking mechanism and having a secondary mechanism adapted to be operated by a key other than the one'used for the primary locking mechanism, the secondary lockin g mechanism being adapted to be used when it is desired to render the primary mechanism inoperative. This form of lock is adapted to be used, for instance, in a tenement. Tenants and janitor may be supplied with keys to operate the primary locking mechanism, and the owner or landlord may be supplied with a key to the secondary locking mechanism, so that when desired the owner or landlord may look a door of a tenant and make it impossible for the tenant to unlock the door.
Another object is to provide an improved key mechanism.
Further advantages of this'device will be brought out in the following specification.

The above-described mechanism comprises the latch mechanism and means for operating it. The knobs G G and spindles C C may be equipped with any suitable locking mechanism-for instance, one such as shown in my former patent, No. 626,341, granted June 6, 1899, and as such a locking mechanism is fully described and shown in said patent I have merely shown the same in dotted outline. Furthermore, any locking device of similar character may be used instead of the mechanism shown in said patent.
For convenience of description I have used the letter H to designate the locking mechanism, (shown in dotted outline in Fig. 2 and partly in full lines in Fig. 1,) and this mechanism I shall term the primary locking mechanism, as it is the mechanism ordinarily used.
What I shall term the secondary locking mechanism will be now described.
Pivoted to the frame A is a detent J, adapted to swing into the position shown in dotted outline in Fig. 3, the detent bearing against the rear face of the head of the latch-bolt, and thus prevent the retraction of the latchbolt F. The key mechanism for operating this detent comprises substantially an ordinary pin-tumbler mechanism, but differing somewhat in construction. Inasmuch as the key makes only a quarter-turn in bringing the detent J into position, I have provided two sets of tumblers, so that the key mechanism may have two locking positions and the key may be inserted or withdrawn when the mechanism is in either position.
K is an outer barrel fastened to the frame A and having boxes K and K which house suitable spring-pressed tumblers K L is an inner rotatable shaft which supports the key M and which is directly connected to detent J by a rod N.
Fig. 4 shows a key in position to rotate the shaft L.
Fig. 5 shows the shaft L locked from rotation and ready for the insertion of the key.
Fig. 6 shows-the positions of the parts aflatch F and the key has been withdrawn.
As many tumblers may be used in each set as desired. In the drawings I have only shown two.
It is obvious that a great many changes may be made in the construction herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is 1. 2. A frame, latch mechanism mounted thereon and embracing a latch-bolt, primary key mechanism for locking said latch mechanism, and a secondary key mechanism for operating means for engaging the rear face of the head of said latch-bolt for locking the same.
3. A frame, latch mechanism mounted thereon and embracing a latch-bolt pivoted to the frame, primary key mechanism for locking said latch mechanism, and a secondary key mechanism for engaging said latchbolt and locking the same.
