APPLIOATIONJILED FEB. 18, 1902.
N0 MODEL.
W N 555 /NVENTOF? IT E GERRARD B. WILLETT. u 5K t UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GERRARD B. VVILLETT, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
COAT AND HAT HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'Patent No. 722,548, dated March 10, 1903.
Application filed February 18, 1902 Serial No. 94,596. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GERRARD B. WILLETT, of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coat and Hat Hangers,- of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a neat ornamental device adapted to be hung on the wall to support a hat and coat and prevent the latter from being wrinkled or rubbed by contact with the wall.
A further object is to provide a rack or holder formed, preferably, of a single piece of wire bent into the desired form, and hence Very simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
A further object is to provide a coat and hat rack which may also be adapted to support an umbrella.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figurel represents a front View of a combined hat and coat rack embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
In the drawings, 2 represents a wire of suitable size having one end, that forms the top of the rack, bent to form the laterally-extending loops 3 and the downwardly curved or bowed part 4 between them. The loops 3 are adapted to receive the brim of a hat, while the crown thereof rests within the curve of the part 4, which supports the weight of the hat and prevents undue strain on the brim. After forming the loops 3 the end of the wire is passed around the main portion thereof to form an eye or loop 5, by which the device is suspended on the wall. The opposite or lower end of the wire is bent forward, forming an offset 5', and is also bent outwardly upon each side to form the spring-loops 6, whereon the coat is hung. The ofiset 5 causes the coat to set out from the wall and prevents it from rubbing thereon. The wire after being passed several times around the rod or shank connecting the coat and hat hangeris extended down below the loop 6 and after forming an eye 7 is laterally turnedinto the umbrellahook 8. v v
The hanger is preferably made of a single piece of wire bent into the desired form or shape, the wire being of suitable size to permit of the device yielding or springing under the weight of the garments thereon. This characteristic of the holder allows it to conform more accurately to the shape of the hat or coat.
I claim as my invention A combined coat and hat hanger, comprisreceiving loops 3 and an intermediate downwardly-curved crown-receiving part 4 formed by bending the upper end of said rod, laterallyextending coat-supporting loops 6 formed by bending the lower end of said rod, and a forwardly-extending ofiset 5 provided in the end of said rod near said loops to set them out from the wall andprevent rubbing and wrinkling of the garment hung thereon and around which ofiset the lower portion of said rod is Wrapped after the formation of said loops, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of February, 1902.
GERRARD B. WILLETT. In presence of- RICHARD PAUL, M. O. NOONAN.
