SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 722,491, dated March 10, 1903.

To (tZZ whom, it may concern: Be it known that I, FRANK CLAUS, a subject of theEmperor of Germany, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and My invention will be more fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 illustrates a plan view of a mechanical movement embodying myinvention.

Fig. 4. shows a detached sectional plan view of one of the clutches, enlarged, the outer covering of the parts being broken away on a line 4: at of Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 are diagrammatic views of the clutches in position to transmit, respectively, a forward and backward motion to the rotating parts of the machine; and Fig. 7 is a detached perspective view of the clutch-levers.
Referring to the reference-letters of the drawings, A represents a reciprocating bar, which may be connected to any reciprocating prime mover-such, for instance, as the piston of a steam-engine or other reciprocating motive power. and below with racks A and A which engage pinions B and B loosely supported upon shafts B and B Each of these pinions is provided with a hub 21, through which passes a slidable bar 0, which is united to a grooved collar D, loosely supported upon the shaft supporting the pinions. The collar D is operated by a lever E, having a bifurcated end inclosing the collar, and pins 6 6, adapted to the groove thereof. The lever E is fulcrumed at E and is connected to a notched operating-plate E provided with an operating finger-piece E out of action.
This bar is provided above The plate E is provided with three notches e, 6 and 6 which are caused to engage the edge of a plate F to hold the lever E in position by means of a spiral spring S. The lower pinion B which is loosely mounted on a shaft B has a similarly-arranged collar D, and the connecting parts are identical with those just described and are indicated by similar letters of reference.
In the rear of the pinions B and B are cupshaped disks G G, each being secured to its respective shaft by means of set-screws g g.
The shafts B and B are provided, respectively, with gear-wheels H and H, which engage a broad pinion I, mounted upon a shaft J, provided with a fly-wheel K. Arranged between the pinion B and, the disk G and between the pinion B and lower disk G is the clutch mechanism by which the pinions may be connected with the disks to operate them in either direction, or, if desired, by moving the levers E to the proper position one or both of the clutches may be thrown As both of the clutches are identical in construction, a description of one will suffice for the other, and similar letters of reference will be employed to designate similar parts in both cases. The hub b of each of the pinions is recessed at b to receive the sliding bar 0, which is slightly concave on its upper surface, as shown at c. The
sliding bar is provided near its end with an inclined slot O to receive a pin 0 which is projected from a lever C hinged to toggle-le- "vers C and C Closely engaging the inner wall of the cupped disk G is a split ring G, which has rounded ends adapted to concave surfaceforming sockets in the toggle-levers C and C The toggle-levers are spread out and the ends of the split ring are caused to embrace the inner wall of the cupped disk by means of an elliptic spring S, which is held by a support 0 on the hub b and bears against a cross-piece e arranged upon the pin 0, which connects the levers O C and 0 When the machine is in operation, each of the levers E is operated, so that the notch e is in engagement with the plate F, as shown in Fig. 1. Then the clutches are thrown out of action. If, however, the leverE be moved so that the notch e is in engagement with the plate F, then the levers O C and C will assume the position shown in the diagram 'Fig. 5, and a movement of the bar A will cause the rotatable parts to move in the direction indicated by the full arrows shown in Fig. 1. 'If the lever E be shifted so that the notch e is in engagement with the plate F, the levers C C and C will assume the position shown in the diagram Fig. 6, and the rotatable parts of the device by a movement of the bar A will turn in the direction indicated by the dotted arrows in Fig. 1.
Having described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. Apower-transmittingdevice comprising a bar adapted to be reciprocated, pinions en gaging the bar and loosely journaled upon shafts, gear-wheels fixedly secured to the shafts, a pinion mounted upon a shaft and in engagement with said gear-wheels and clutch mechanism located between the loose pinions and. their supporting-shafts, substan-.
tially as specified.
2. A power-transmitting device comprising a bar adapted to be reciprocated, pinions loosely journaled upon shafts and engaging the bar, disks fixedly secured to the shafts carrying the pinions, clutches arranged between the pinions and disks, a pinion mounted upon a driven shaft, the gears fixedly secured to the first-mentioned shafts engaging said pinion, substantially as specified.
3. Apower-transmitting device comprising a bar adapted to reciprocate provided with upper and lower racks, pinions engaging said racks and looselyjournaled upon shafts, disks fixedly secured to said shafts, reversible clutch mechanism between the pinions and disks and levers for operating said clutches, substantially as specified.
4. A power-transmitting device comprising a bar adapted to reciprocate having teeth arranged upon the upper and lower sides thereof, pinions engaging the same, shafts supporting the pinions, disks fixedly secured to the shafts, reversible clutches between the pinions and disks, levers for operating said clutches, gear-wheels mounted upon each of said shafts, and a shaft provided with a pinion of sufficient width to engage both of the gear-wheels, substantially as specified.
5. A power-transmitting device com prising a bar adapted to reciprocate having teeth arranged upon opposite sides thereof, pinions engaging the same, shafts loosely supporting the pinions,disks fixedly secured to the shafts, reversible clutches arranged'between the pinions and disks, levers for operating the clutches, a driven shaft, and a train of gears arranged between the clutches and driven shaft, substantially as specified.
6. A power-transmitting device comprising a bar adapted to reciprocate provided with racks, pinions loosely supported upon shafts engaging the rack, the same being provided with projecting hubs, cup-shaped disks inclosing the hubs and fixedly secured to said shafts, split rings arranged Within said disks, toggle-levers engaging the ends of the rings, sliding bars for operating the toggles, means for operating the sliding bars, gear-wheels fixedly secured to the first-mentioned shafts and a pinion mounted upon a shaft and in engagement with each of said gear-wheels, substantially as specified.
7. A power-transmitting device comprising a bar adapted to reciprocate provided above and below with a toothed rack, means for operating said bar, pinions arranged above and below the bar engaging the teeth of the rack, shafts loosely supporting the pinions, disks fixedly secured to the shafts, reversible clutch mechanism between the pinions and disks, sliding bars carried by said pinions for operating the clutch mechanism, levers for operating said bars, notched plates to secure said leversin position, gearwheels fixedly secured to said shafts and a pinion mounted upon ashaft and engaging both of said gear-wheels, substantially as specified.
