HEADER-PLATFORM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,488, dated March 10, 1903. Application filed May 12,1902. Serial No. 106,894. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, RICHMOND L. CAMP- BELL, Sr., GEORGE W. SCHWARTZ, and CHARLES H. SCHWARTZ,citizens of the United States, and residents of Grass Valley, in the county of Sherman and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Header-Platform, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to reaping-machines; and its object is to provide a new and improved header-platform which is simple and durable in construction and arranged to comfortably support the header driver or manipulator, and hence render his work easier and more accurate than heretofore possible under the jolting motion incident to the headerwheel traveling over rough ground.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
The guide-wheel A of the header is journaled in the fork 13, mounted to turn in a suitable bearing on the pole C and carrying on its post D the usual handle E, adapted to be taken hold of by the header driver or ma nipulator standing on the platform F, springsupported on the pole C. The platform F is provided on its under side with two sets of lugs G and G for engaging the free ends of leaf-springs H, extending longitudinally and clipped at their middle to the ends of a transverse arm I, clipped or otherwise secured to the pole C, as plainly illustrated in Fig. 2. The arm I is strengthened by a suitable trussbeam 1. (See Fig. 2.)
One set of lugs, G, is pivotally connected with the springs H, while the other 'set of lugs, G, slidingly receives the freeends of the said leaf-springs, so as to allow the springs to readily yield without unduly straining the springs.
As shown in the drawings,
the platform F is spring-supported above the pole C, and hence when the wheel A travels over rough uneven ground the incident jolting is not transmitted to the platform F, as the latter is spring-supported from the pole, and hence the workman is comfortably supported on the platform and can properly attend to his duties.
Instead of the leaf-springs we may employ coil-springs to yieldingly support the platform from the header-pole.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A guiding-header having a platform, a transverse arm attached to the header-pole, and springs interposed between the arm and the platform, as set forth.
2. A guiding-header having a plat-form, a transverse arm secured to the header-pole, and leaf-springs extending longitudinally and secured at their middle tothe ends of the said transverse arm, the ends of the springs supporting the said platform, as set forth.
3. A guiding-header havinga platform provided with sets of lugs, a transverse trussarm secured on the header-pole, and leafsprings extending longitudinally and clipped at their middle to the ends of the said trussarm, one end of each spring being pivotally connected with a lug, and the other end being slidably connected with another lug, as set forth. p
4:. The combination with a pole, and a platform, of an arm attached to the pole, and springs fastened to the arm and connected at their ends to the platform, each spring having a slidab le connection with said platform.
5. The combination with a pole, and a platform, of a single arm clamped to said pole, and springs fastened to the end portions of the arm, each spring having a loose connection at one end with the platform and a slidable connection at its other end to said platform.
